I have a question about one. I have a woodland scenics cutter, and I was intending on using it to cut 3" thick foam (the soft spongy kind) for making some storage units. I am moving my family to a new apartment and need my models to survive the trip! So can a hot wire cutter be effective on the soft foam? I would try it myself, but I wanted to know if anything catastrophic has happened to somebody trying a similar project.

It'll cut through but also melt bits you don't want melting & let off poisonous smoke (which is not good for you or your little'uns!). the plastic will then set into horrible solid lumps - please don't do it.

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Uhhh.... I am not cutting plastic. Please re-read the original post.

Regardless, I went ahead and answered my own question by already trying it myself and it works, albeit slowly. Be sure to use it in a well ventilated area, though, because there are some pretty heavy fumes.
