Hello, I have looked through the related threads on this forum and couldn't find the direct ruling.

Codex Black Templar (4th edition, but it's the most current)

Commanders and Chaplains (not the Emperor's Champion!) may lead a command squad. The character and the unit are a single HQ choice. The character is a member of the unit and may not leave it. If the squad is destroyed the character may operate independently.

One paragraph down it says,
A character who is leading or attached to a squad does not stop being an independent character for the purposes of close combat.

Main Rulebook (5th edition)

Some Codex books allow you to field characters together with a special unit that they cannot leave during the game (which is normally called a 'retinue', 'bodyguard' or similar). Where this is the case, the character counts as an upgrade character until all of the other members of this unit are killed, at which point it starts counting as an independent character and it will do so for the rest of the game.

If a unit that has been joined by an independent character assaults into close combat, the character assaults too, as it is part of the unit. When the attacks are resolved, however, independent characters are always treated as a seperate single-model unit (as described under Multiple Combats on page 41), even though they have joined the unit.

How would this play RAW? How should this play RAI? Are they Different?

Thank You.

Check the Black Templar FAQ, but if it doesn't say anything go by the Black Templar Codex.

Codex > Rulebook.

Therefore, Black Templar IC's use their own retinue Rules, not those of the BRB.

So yeah, BT Retinues have all the Disadvantages and none of the Advantages.

Until this is Errata'd, you just have to live with it.

As for RaW/RaI:
RaW: Use the Codex Rules
RaI: Also Use the codex rules. If it was not inteneded, they would not have put that rule in the Codex.

SM assault termies are a sledgehammer. BT assault termies are a woodchipper.

Being singled out by a Klaw, Fist or Force weapon and being insta-deathed and not being able to attack if not in base to base come to mind.

The codex says to treat them as an IC in close combat, so they can be singled out.

This is how the Adepticon FAQ rules as well.

.Only a fool believes there is such a thing as price gouging. Things have value determined by the creator or merchant. If you don't agree with that value, you are free not to purchase.
