Subject: Assault and Thunderfire Questions

Ok, so these questions stem from a game that my friends and I played this weekend:
1. When assaulting a vehicle, on the initial charge (moving 6" to assault a vehicle) what section of the armor do the figures assaulting hit? Now I know that the rule book states that "all hits are resolved against the vehicle's rear armor," but my opponent/friend is stating that he and another of my friends looked at the city fighting rules and somewhere in there it states that on the initial charge, only the front armor is hit (assuming that the majority of of figures are assaulting the front of the vehicle. On the side they would be hitting side armor, etc). I thought there were specific rules to city fighting (ie the majority of the map is covered with buildings). So comming to my question, where (if it does) does it state in the rules that the initial charge hit the front armor or do all assaults (either first round and/or subsequent rounds) hit rear armor?
2. When targeting the thunderfire cannon, what do we target? The techmarine or the cannon? If we target the cannon, what do we use as strength and toughness? The cannon has to be destroyable as there are specific rules stating that the tech marine becomes an independant character if the thunderfire cannon is destroyed. I guess we are confused as to how to attack the thunderfire as the only stats we can find are the stats for the techmarine in the space marines codex 5th edition.
as always, I'm just the n00b with the questions. thanks for everyones help

1. Those are rules specific to city fight (if they exist, I personally don't recall them). In the assault phase, all vehicles except for walkers are always hit on rear armor. It's spelled out quite obviously in the 5th ed rulebook, which they seem to be ignoring.
2. You target either. Or rather, you shoot at the unit, and hits are allocated as per artillery rules. On a die roll of 1-4 the techmarine is hit and your shot is resolved against his toughness of 4. On a 5-6 the cannon is hit and your shot is resolved against its AV of 10.

Thanks for the reply those are awesome. Where specifically in the space Marines codex does it talk about the armor value of 10 for the thunderfire cannon? I dont have the codex as my friend has the SMs, but I'm just curious so we can all look at it.
What is weird is the problem we were having was with a walker, but they were applying it to all vehicles and now we know.
Again, thanks alot for the information

The Thunderfire cannon is considered artillery, which is in the artillery rules in the main rulebook. which is where it talks about the AV value

Also keep in my that in assault you are only allowed to assault the tech marine, the cannon just sits there.

Just cause it is worth reiterating what rustyknight said, it is the other way around on what you hit
1-4 hits gun
5-6 hits techmarine
