im painting 1500pts tanks and all of them and was wondeing why all the hate for the models?i will be doing other IG factions as well but was wondering about the hate of the catachan. heres my first of many to come its taken with flash to brighten up the colors to see them in nautrel ligt check out my other forum.

I am not really sure,I like them.

But all that skin is a bit of a nightmare to paint,for a newish painter like me.

Thats a great paintjob. I for one love the Catachans.

However people don't like them mainly because of their huge arms however I never really got the beef with proportions anyway. Sisters of Battle tower over Space Marines and Praetorians are just as tall as Catachans. If anything, GW should release some proper Space Marine models because right now they're tiny for what they're supposed to represent.

Compared to Cadians, Catchans have much better looking heads (the helmet looks too much like an old school football one for me to like not to mention their F'ugly faces) and Cadians are overall much more boring in terms of design and poses. I own about a 100 Catachans and about fifty or so Cadians so I've got the experience in building them.

I personally like the Catachans. The arms could maybe be a bit smaller, but hey. And at my local GW (leicester) there are so many damn catachan armies springing up it'scrazy. There's also a really cool one apinted in a sorta desert scheme. The only other problem is some of the body poses in the command box are really bad.

Anyway, that one you got there looks pretty neat. Good skin, which is always a bonus with the Cats.

I think it is mainly about their huge, disproportionately large arms which I believe are even thicker than power armoured SM ones. But from what I can tell the arms in the command squad and heavy weapons teams are better looking (about 1/2 the size). Personally I don't think they look that silly, its heroic scale after all.

My main beef with ALL imperium troops is that they are out of scale, and I lack the motivation to true-scale my stuff.

its that coupled with the slowed way the lasguns fit the arms... it juts irritating to be honest especially fi you need to put together 20+ of them

my reasoning is:
cadians have cooler guns
the bandanas are slowed, I'd rather have a regular head and GS some bandanas on it, that way people could use them for conversions and stuff easier.
arms are too big
I don't want and entire army to look like rambo, as much as he kicks ass, one is enough.

the proportion is horribly wrong.

other wise, yes. i would actually collect them.

I'm surprised no one is selling a replacement set of more believable arms.

As said above . The arms , the faces. Just not realistic looking, compared to the cadians. Its not often you see a good/cool/realistic paint job on a catachan. I think yours is the best in a long time.
Although having said that I've seen a lot of 28mm wargaming minis that are a lot worse. In so far as someone who used, for example these http://www.chilternminiatures.co.uk/html/usa_marines___grunts.html to game with , would find the new GW stuff amazing. There are of course other mini makers that do a better/worse job. Hopefully , as in the new command squad , if GW redo the troops then the arms and faces will improve.

I think the huge arms are to represent that these guys are some bad ass beef cake mofos from a death world

Space Marines come from the harshest backgrounds imaginable, but they don't have disproportionate muscles.

Because they look like Human/Ork hybrids. Also, shades and cigars were yesterdays battlefield chic.

the arms are huge,i do agree,im not sure if the new plastic troop set is improved the heads or anything, GW might have done what they did with the new gretchen s,et add a new herder and an extra head and make it out of plastic and call it new.ill see if maybe i can find away to make them more liked and thanks for the feed back

As much as we all hate the LARGE ARMS , its absolutely mandatory GW keep it.

You know how GW is picky on WYSIWYG , Catachan still have 5+ armor safe (how does that work for tournaments lol)

So the conclusion is their large arms provide +1 armor save , as well
as their ugly face for another +1.

I used to collect them and quickly got bored.
However, the heads are much better then the cadian ones.

The problem is that they all look like Rambo, as everyone else has pointed out. What GW should have done was made them more like troops in Vietnam. It would have made for a really good and realistic look. But, instead they made them look like tits. like a buch of body builders gone into a firefight.

LOL Space marines are all toned and gak like a razor blade and catachans are just a ball plan hammer, there sposed to look rough there from a ruggered inviroment

I like Catachan, they may have some huge arms but so what. The problem with IG is that Cadians look like they have Carapace Armor on and Catachan look like they have almost no armor. So no IG, has what I would label a flak jack to get the true 5+ save.

I like the Catachans okay.

Their arms are kind of disproportionate, but so are everyone's hands, head, and weapons.

It's true they look like they could beat up space marines, but I see that as more of a fault of the space marine models having too thin of limbs than the Catachan models having too much muscle.

I think they look like complete turds. I feel like after the battle, they will go back home to govern California.

I could forgive the arms, and the horrible, horrible expressions on their faces, if only there was some variety in the heads--they all look identical to me.

And that's what breaks it, they don't look realistic at all. No group of 10 (much less 50+!) human beings looks that similar unless they are clones, or they're wearing bulky uniforms--and that's where the Cadians, as boring as they are, completely own the Catachans for believability. You can at least imagine that under the helmet and the layers of armor, that the soldiers look a little different from each other.

I would love to play an army of deathworld badasses, raised in the harshest environments and dismissive of Imperial Guard protocol, as others have said kinda like a US Vietnam unit that's been in the bush too long. When GW makes models worthy of the fluff, I'll be the first to come a'running.

Bottom Line for me

-As said like 200 times before yes the arms are way too big
-Facial expressions are crap
-Rambo Like = Well duh who friggn else goes running around in killing people in harsh environments killing people and is famous
-They are not the best looking models but in the correct hands like any model have serious killing potential. When those large arm are smashing your face in we will see who is ugly. lol

the heads are silly so i think some gas mask might be in need and use some plant like stuff to add some camo and hide the arms a little and ill due some research on jungle war fare to try and make them look a little neater

Agree with the others. The arms are just -too- huge. Hopefully when, or even if, GW decides to release new Cadian and Catachan boxed sets (Though I'm hoping more for the fabled Greatcoat sprues), they'll tone the arms down and revamp some faces. The command squad came out good, but now the rest of them only look even more outdated. Maybe a few more torso options too. Wifebeaters and Sleeveless Field Jackets get pretty unimaginitive for a force that's supposed to look ragtag in that "We're the only ones that can actually do the job right" sort of way.
