I mean, why would you transport goods to places using boats when it would be far easier to do it by plane or train?

What advantage could armies gain from travelling by sea when they could just yomp or sail?

Why put nukes underwater when you can put them in the sky or in space?

Why fish when you could farm?

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Planes may be the swiftest way to travel, but the are hardly the most romantic. I love the sea. I love sailing. I use a boat relaxation, I use a plane to get places. To answer the last question, fish kicks ass. It's delicious. And high in Omega 3's.

I mean, why would you transport goods to places using boats when it would be far easier to do it by plane or train?
***Cost prohibitive. Air freight is extravagantly expensive vs. seaborne transportation costs. Further, there are items that can’t be shipped via plane. My ego cannot fit into a plane for example.

What advantage could armies gain from travelling by sea when they could just yomp or sail?
***It’s the weight/cost thing again. Even if there are aircraft capable of carrying an M1 tank, you’re talking one tank per flight. That’s not going to work if you’re trying to move armored brigades except in extremis.

Why put nukes underwater when you can put them in the sky or in space?
****Its illegal t o put them in space (wiunk wink Russian weather satellite, yea…)
***Air define air? They were put in subs because subs are difficult to detect in sufficient time to avoid the counterstrike.

Why fish when you could farm?
****Same thing now with the concept of fish farming-good point though.

"I.. I know my time has come" Tethesis said with a gasp, a torrent of blood flowing from his lips.
"No! Hang on brother!!" Altharius could feel the warmth slip away from his dear sibling's hands

Tethesis's reached out his bloodied arm to Altharius's face.
"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

Gathering the Informations.

I see this carried over from the 40k River battles thread. And I have to laugh.

Logistically, it's easier for modern forces to stage a combined air/beach assault than it is to do a land based attack. Especially given the fact that it's easier to secure land-based borders than it is to secure beaches en masse. Airborne forces can easily drop in and secure an opening for the naval assets coming in, and can be refueled/resupplied on carriers.

But. This is *modern* stuff. No countries have any way of deploying from orbit, or dropping their forces right into the middle of it. If we had stuff on the scale of the Imperium/Tau, etc, we'd be mounting atmospheric assaults after softening up the target with orbital bombardments most likely.

Somewhere in south-central England.

The simple reason is that boats are much better than planes for lots of things.

Example: Transporting billions of dollars of toys from China to America. Boat = cheap. Plane = expensive.

Example: Travel from Portsmouth to Gosport.
Boat = 15 minute trip. Plane = 30 minute trip to get to the airport, followed by security, check-in etc.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Some goods pose to great a threat potential when sent by air, so must be sent by some alternative way (surface).

Some people don't like to fly ( which is why the Cure don't tour down under. Robert Smith is a claustrophobic, seasick, afraid-of-flying wuss.)

Because it is generally more efficient to move the bulk goods by surface than by air.

Nukes (weapons) are banned in space by treaty.

You can't farm fish. They kinda die when you plant them.

We have trout and salmon 'farms' here (although I CAN go down to the beach and catch them (with a rod) from the sand).

They're generally tanks set up on land to stop the fishies from going all dried-up and dead-like.

Some areas/communities don't have much in the way of arable land (for farming) or the climate doesn't permit it. If either of these two is true and you live on the coast, you learn to like fish or move.

In terms of goods being transported, like Fraz said its a money thing. Transport by ship is vastly cheaper than any alternatives. In fact its cheaper to transport by sea than by rail.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Forever alone

Fish farming is a big industry down here in Tasmania. We export our salmon all over the world (apparently), and if you drive along the larger rivers close to the sea, you'll see a lot of fish farms floating in the water. Fish can get in, but not out, so as well as the fish born in them, you get idiots swimming in to try and join the shoal, increasing the yield a bit.

My family also has an old friend who used to own a large trout farm a long way out of town. Huge dams filled with tasty rainbow trout, ripe for the taking. He sold it recently, but it still ships out all over the state.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

It's far more expensive to transport goods via planes, and trains don’t cross oceans. The freighter version of the 747-400 can carry 218,800 lbs of cargo, the most of any commercial cargo plane. The cargo has to be non-explosive, non-corrosive, etc. The largest bulk cargo ship can carry 365, 000 tons of cargo. The ship can carry as much in one voyage as 3300 747 flights. The difference is speed. The ship can cross the Pacific in 3 weeks. The plane can do that in 12 hours. And, the plane does not have to land at a coastal airport. That is why people, and priority mail travel by plane instead of by boat.
Fifty wrote:What advantage could armies gain from travelling by sea when they could just yomp or sail?

Armies are huge things with voracious appetites for food, fuel and ammo. Vehicles are heavy and bulky. There is usually not a reason for men to arrive well in advance of their material. May as well keep them on a boat, away from mischief.
Fifty wrote:Why put nukes underwater when you can put them in the sky or in space?

The Strategic Air Command used to keep nuclear-armed bombers airborne around the clock. A couple of high profile accidents put that to rest. Nukes underwater on subs are virtually undetectable. The flight time of a ballistic missile from a sub offshore of an enemy country is mere minutes, and the enemy will not know where to place his anti-missile systems. Nukes in space is very dangerous, and prohibited. Parking a nuke in orbit over an opponent country reduces response time to such a degree, it is considered an act of war. And, it is crazy expensive to put stuff in orbit. It can cost more to put 365 lbs in orbit than to transport 365,000 tons across the ocean.
