I played a game of Apocalypse with Shep, Gitsmack, and Kevin Nash over the weekend and one of my units was a Valkyrie carrying a squad of Veterans. The game pitted Kevin Nash and I against Shep and Gitsmack. It was a great game and Kevin Nash and I won... but some questions came up about measuring distance from the Valkyrie for the purpose of scoring an objective (or contesting). The basic question is, when measuring distance from the Valkyrie to the objective, what on the Valkyrie can I measure from, the hull not counting the tail and wings, the model counting the tail and wings, or from the base? We measured from the hull counting the tail and wings. I saw that a Q&A on BOLS are using the following for their tournament:

Q: What do I measure from when firing at, disembarking from, or passing near a Valkyrie and Vendetta?
A: For the purposes of armor facing, disembarking, and the 1" rule, only count the hull of the vehicle -- ignore the tail and wings. For determining range to the model, use the model as normal. Ignore the height of the model when embarking or disembarking; models get in and out of Valkyries and Vendettas at the height of the base.

If we go by their rules, it sounds like we played it correctly.

What do you think?

This is quoted from one of the other Valkyrie threads:

1. Can the Valkyrie contest objectives/claim them if loaded with troops, since it is so high off the ground? If I put its base on the objective?
2. Can the Valkyrie still outflank with troops on board?
3. Can the Valkyrie embark/disembark troops as normal without having to deep strike (height problems b/c of base)?

1. Yes, treat the vehical as if it sits on the table for this purpose.
2. Yes, the vehical does not lose this special ablitity.
3. Yes, look at answer # 1

I'd follow the current rules used in major tournaments personally, so I would play it as described above

So you're ok to let IG players claim the various BONUSSES from the height when it suits them, but when that same height becomes annoying they may ignore it.

Shooting, being shot at & generally being spotted from Afar.. it stands where it stands - On its high base.

In terms of unloading troops, contested objectives and the 1" rule, I think it should count as sitting on the ground while still adhering the the above premise.

This way it can actually occupy an area, without troops 'legeally' moving onto its base without coming in 1", unload drops from its hatches (as it does have access points which arent required by its Grav-drop special rule so obviously are intented to be used) - All while still being visible from its high stand.

This vehicle should never be able to get cover from vehicles/troops/most terrain.. purely because of its design. There wont be many cases when you cant see more than 50% of it clearly. Thats a thorn, right there. Just needs to be viewed from all perspectives.

As per Raw, you measure from the hull. As such it is impossible that model to contest a ground objective as it is more than 3" off the ground. While it is also technically prohibited to disembark, its pretty fair to work something out with your opponent to allow it to disembark/embark. As per RAW, it is not allowed.

By RAW it cannot contest any objectives on the ground level, because the hull is 5" up, thus further than 3" from the objective. However, the benefit of its height is that it can contest objectives in higher levels of ruins (due to the height of its base), where a normal vehicle cannot reach.

You gotta take the good with the bad.

While not putting in my two cents, yet, on whether or not it could contest an objective in a normal 40k game, I will add that in apocalypse the distance to claim an objective is 6", which was the case in the game we were playing.

I don't see where allowing to troops to disembark at ground level but then disallowing Melta double dice is fair. Can't have your cake and eat it.

pardon me for reporting the way the Indy GT circuit seems to be ruling this.

I intend to play in indy GT events (as well as GW GT events) so I will follow with the way they rule things because that makes me the most prepared to deal with those rulings if/when they come during tournament games.

@Caffran9 - Agreed, my concern will be with Indy GT tournament play, as this year will be my first year playing in GTs of any type and I want to make sure my list is set up per their rules. I am going to the BattleFoam Wild West Shootout and they haven't posted their FAQ yet :(, so I will just have to wait. If this ends up being too much of an issue I might end up not playing guard and just do CSM
