Prependix: (2014-03-31) It's been almost 5 years since my last post here. In that time I've been in and out of the game a few times, A new edition of 40K came out, I graduated University, and started a new army. (Imperial guard, to be specific). In a short while I'll add the first few pictures of my newest project - Building an Imperial Knight. I'd also like to acknowledge and apologize for my *abysmal* spelling in the old posts. I'll eventually go back to edit them, but for now, Please pretend that I'm not a 12 year old. Cheers!
Here's the WIP thread for my space marines army. Right now all it is is a tactical squad, but in a week or so i'll have an aobr and maccrage set to add to it.
Here's the base coat colour I used. It's mostly sunburst yellow, but i mixed some snakebite leather in to give it a richer, more golden look. Couldn't tell you the exact ratios as I diddn't really measure. I'm going to guess it's about 8 or 9 parts yellow to one part snakebite.
This is the whole squad. I decided i wanted them to be sort of unique so they all have bayonets or something distinctive. One guy is dual wielding his boltgun and bolt pistol, and one guy has a chainsword bayonet. His name is Mark "Pheonix" Brennan. No GoW ref there!
Here's the bases. I'm debating whether to wash them with a sand-like solour to give them a desert look. I have a ciuyple of my Tau in the back for comparison. I dont want my basing on both armys to be the same.

The yellow looks a lot like Bubonic Brown, if it is similiar in real life maybe using this would save some effort, great colour by the way!

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. The yellow is actually a bit darker in real life. It looks really awesome. I also realised earlier today that I'd subconsiously chosen the same colours as my university sports teams XD. I'm considering renaming them the Guelph Marines and modelling a chapter master or captain after the president, who is bald and never wears shoes and is awesome. At least i wouldn't have to come up with a crest that way :-P

Whatever you do... DON'T leave the base ring the same color as your mini. That is just gaudy and will totally detract from the model. Paint the base's rim in a shade of the earth it's supposed to be representing. More importantly, do it in a darker color. Especially so with a bright paintjob like yours.

good thing that's easy to change. They're gold right now. I'll fix it ssometime soon. Should I do that for my Tau too (They're in the background of the Bases shot.
And now, what you've all been waiting for, Thee first mostly painted Paladin of man!
LOOK AT IT. LOOK.
I'm very proud of it. it took almost a solid day to do, but It's so worth it. I decided to go ahead with the basing it off my University; that gryphon is our school logo. The pis are there to denote the squad classification. This is Pi Squad. I havn't put insignia on the shoulders yet, because im not sure what to put there. Also i'm not sure how i should go about highlights and shading. any suggestions?

Throw down some highlights and that is a finished mini! Good work on the freehand, BTW. Maybe you could do a wash before a highlight if you want to do some extra credit?

I think you should spend some more time with making bases. They could be a lot better and they are not hard to do.

If you are unsure how to do a wash, that is ok. You could try just drybrushing a highlight on a few spots on the model. The aquila is paramount to my eye, a lighter mix of yellow and orange drybrushed over it would make it look less flat. Automatically Appended Next Post: Append:
Your freehand is very clean, so I imagine highlighting should be no problem for you. Check out some tutorials on it and I'm sure you'll pick it up in no time!

Looks good, bro. Throw on a wash and change the basing scheme, IMHO.
The green flock looks too out of place with the color scheme of the mini. I would roll with a combo or brown grass and brown or red ballast on the base. I think that would really set the minis off.
I really like the color scheme though, not something I have seen too many times.

I only have the green flock right now, but i might try to pick up some brown soon. infortunately i already have all 10 bases based. They look pretty bad becausse they have like, 5 layers of paint on them and the colour underneath the flock is a different colour than the ring, but i'll probably re-base the whole set when i pick up a basing kit.

Im with LBursley on the painting of the flock. Flock left on a base will just come off and annoy you. Painting it will keep it on there! Good work so far man. Its always good to see someone proud of their efforts instead of saying "I painted for hours and this sucks... its garbage, TELL ME HOW TO DO IT!!!"
I dig your SM for sure

After a few days... I HAS AN UPDATE!
I've finished 5 minis (well, not counting highlighting) The other 4 arent quite as good as sergeant Weiner, but they turbed out decent. Also i Made the bases nicer. Soooo pictures!
Pi Squad Combat Team one
The finished models of (from left) Knight-Marine Mark "Pheonix" Edephon, Knight-Marine Chen "The Dragon" Xiao, Paladin-Sergeant Jack "Bullseye" Weiner, Kight-Marine James "Red" Rodriguez, Knight-Marine Kelar "Scarface" Paccino.
Paladin-Sergeant Jack "Bullseye" Weiner
Sergeant Jack in all his glory. Half his face was torn off by a Tyranid Genestealer during the battle for Macragge in the first Tyrannic war. He carries a Bolt pistol with a scope, and is known for being very profficient with it, earning him the monkier "Bullseye"
Knight-Marine James "Red" Rodriguez
Knight-Marine James Rodriguez is from the world of Iax. He is the newest member of Pi Squad and as such has some trouble fitting in with his teammates. His prowess with a Missile Launcher more than makes up for his lack of experience however. While most Paladins choose to wear the standard pauldrons denoting unit and unit type, Rodriguez chooses to wear Red pauldrons, only displaying the Pi on his left shoulder. This choice has earned him the nickname "Red"
Knight-Marine Chen "The Dragon" Xiao
The Dragon is easily the most hot-tempered member of Pi squad, and that reflects in his choice of weapon. Chen's flamer has claimed the lives of more Orks and Tyranids than anyone cares to count. He is also very capeable in close combat, but forgoes the usual practice of fighting with his flamer as a melee weapon in favour of a set of Nunchaku given to him by his Grandfather.
Knight-Marine Kelar "Scarface" Paccino
Kelar Paccino is a very battle-hardened warrior. He fought alongside his sergeant in the first Tyrannic war and suffered almost the exact same injury as Sergeant Weiner, except he presented a greater ability to heal such a wound and most of his face has healed over. The wound left a terrible scar down the left side of his face, resulting in his callsign of "Scarface". Kelar has taken this name to heart and proudly displays a red scar-like feature on his helmet.
Knight-Marine Mark "Pheonix" Edephon
Mark Edephon was a rather reluctant space marine recruit. His penchance for his own style of combat hindered his indoctrination into the Ultramarines to the point that he spent many years longer than his brother-marines as a scout. Eventually due to his own, borderline heretical attachment of a chainsword onto his bolter he was able to kill a small ork mob single-handedly in the defense of Black Reach. During that battle he was wounded no less than 12 times, managing to get himself back into the fight numerous times. This apparant immunity to death earned him the name "Pheonix"
I've decided that the parent chapter of the Paladins of Man will be the Ultramarines. I still havn't quite nailed down their story yet, But i think i'm going to say that a number of the marines were members of the Ultramarines but left with John Kaiser to found the Paladins of man. Their mission is something like hunting down corruption in the Inquisition and the Imperium at large. Obviously this puts them at odds with a number of Imperial forces. I really like the Idea of them rejecting the idea that technology isn't to be meddles with and have a disproportionate number of techmarines, and often tinker with imperial, and sometimes even alien technology to gain an edge over their enemies. Their base of operations will be a fleet of ships currently near the Farsight Enclaves to the galactic west of the Tau Empire.

after some time, here's an update on my Paladins. This is all of the ones I have painted so far. half of tactical squad Pi, Assault squad Gamma, Dreadnought Theta, and the Land raider Redeemer "Unrepentant" Assault Squad Gamma. The sergeant has melta bombs, a power weapon, combat shield, and plasma pistol. One other marine has a plasma pistol. They don't have names or stories yet, but they'll come in time. Dreadnought Theta. Dubbed "Zeal". A relatively young dreadnought, armed with dreadnought close combat weapon with storm bolter and multi-melta, Theta is known for charging into enemy formations and vehicles with a fury rivalling that of Orks on a Waaagh!. Pictures of the Unrepentant to come soon

I really like all of the stories, and names for your charecters, but I think your painting could benefit alot from a few washes. Have you tried the Citadel Washes? They are extremely easy and don't even have to be watered down. Devlan Mud is my favorite.

These look great!
About the comments on the washes earlier- the only thing that stood out to me was the eagle ont he chests of the marines, a (brown?) wash painted right over that would bring out the crevices. Maybe you can try it on a test marine and see what you think?
I love your color scheme! Very unique and full of character All the little touches you add really make the army! Awesome

Here we are, 5 years later. I'm back into the Hobby, I have 3 full sized armies together, and I think it's time to add a super heavy to my collection. The Knight Titans came out a short while ago, and they look pretty cool, so why not? Let's get to it!
These first two pictures were taken yesterday, as I got a start on the mini.
This was taken right after I thought to myself "I should blog this process!" I whipped out my phone and snapped a photo. You can see I've stuck a leg together, though I hadn't glued it at this point. I generally try to dry fit everything and file down seams so everything is smooth.
Here I've finished the first leg skeleton. Looking pretty good! It already stands up. In the back you can see the most important modelling supply I have - My water bottle! A dehydrated modeler is a bad modeler, so drink up!
Which of course brings us to today - when I had more than half an hour before going to dinner. This is a picture of the groin section and completed legs. They're not glued together because I'm going to magnetize them! So far, I'm not 100% sure what will be magnetized, but I do know the legs, arms, and torso will all be individual components. In the case of the right arm, it will be further magnetized so that I can switch between the Paladin and Errant models.
Here's a fit check of the groin to the legs. Also, I have discovered that I can turn off my phone's flash and add a background! Beaujolais for better photography!
Lastly, all of the bits I've cut out and/or glued together. I'm torn on if I want to magnetize the armor plates. It would be really cool to be able to take the thing right apart when it gets blown up in battle and scatter the parts all over the battlefield, but that might be a lot more trouble than it's worth. Let me know what you think!
I'm also trying to come up with names for this beast. He's certainly going to be a freeblade, and I'm thinking dark purple armour with gold trim. Alternatively, I was considering dark green, and going for a Boba Fett kind of deal.
Time spent so far on this model: about 3 hours. Taking my sweet time to clean up all of the joins!
