Oh no!

Tabletop Gaming News is for sale!

http://www.tabletopgamingnews.com/

This was the place that I'd go to check for news on a daily basis.

Hopefully someone can pick up the ball and run with it...

If not, anyone have any other sites they can suggest?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I'm seriously bummed by this news. Zac did such a great job and TGN was my homepage. I'd always stop there first to see what was new before heading off to my usual net haunts.

I also hope someone can pick it up and continue with it. I'd do it myself if I had the money, time, or skills.

Good luck Zac! Sorry to see you go!

TGN was my favorite site. Really sad to see it go. Fingers crossed for a buyer. I've checked similar sites and nothing yet compares to the layout and frequent updates of TGN.

I thought TGN had it all over The Miniatures Page in terms of layout and overall 'user friendliness'...

I'll be sad to see it go...

I've had quite a few people interested in picking up the site and I've had a few other offers as well that I am discussing with folks.

I am sure that the site will be around in one form or another and will still retain that user friendly look and feel :-)

As someone who has gone through a something similar:

Zac: I feel your pain, I know how hard this decision was for you. I hope you are fortunate enough to find an exceptional buyer, as I was with Dakka, to keep the wonderful legacy that you have left the gaming community alive.

Best of luck & Happy Gaming,

Russ

The Miniatures Page

http://theminiaturespage.com/

It's a bit ramshackle -- I think the owner writes his own software -- and it has the disadvantages as well as the advantages of being very well populated.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

yeah, it definitely has a web 1995 feel to it (and it's because it's been basically the same format since that year!). it's simple, loads quickly (even on mobile devices), and gets the job done. i personally have been checking out both site for the past few years.

As noted above it is a custom layout and is very easy on the browser. I've never had trouble with TMP in regards to the user friendliness of it, but then I've been following it since '96

Since I don't play WarHordes the lack of news on TMP in that area never really affected or bothered me. Although I do remember why that is

I'm wondering about that too... is that why there seems to be a big gap between the last podcast and then next one?

I find it incredibly amusing that he keeps having these hissy fits about hosting and fees and time.

Suck it up, chase your dream and stop closing the site trying to milk people.

Telling people he wants the site to "support him".

Get real. Its a glorified catalogue and minor company marketing tool.

I guess being used for two hours a day by wannabe GW's blows.

Funny how no one in the UK uses the site too. Check the traffic - that's a large bite of the revenue pie you so desperately crave being wasted

If you're going to be hostile, at least have the decency to use proper grammar.

Additionally, wanting the site to support him is not an unrealistic idea. If you are providing a service that sufficiently in demand, all you need to do is sort out how to get paid doing it. I've never met a successful businessman who didn't "milk people", as far as I can tell it is how businesses survive.

He didn't say he wants to be paid for running it - he said "support him". Which is a joke.

I run a large forum with a lot of traffic - adsense, adsdaq, epn etc does not bring in a sustainable income. The bottom line is a wargaming site is not going to "support" you.

Nice Daemon by the way, I spent weeks writing articles to pay for the script and artwork for that. Glad you like it "Clicked" (maybe next time I'll sulk my site doesnt support me and close it for a week instead of doing everything in my power to make it as fun and immersive as possible... )

Running a site in this hobby is about providing entertainment and enjoyment for people. Not throwing your teddy in the corner and sulking when you realise it's a dead niche.
There's a million ways and niches to make a living on the internet - wargaming is not one of them unless you own a top site like Warseer. Move on, weight loss, acai berries, law, medicine etc.

Making $150 a month off any site is a bonus, scale it up - do another one. Then another until you have 5, 10 even 20 sites. Then outsource the work. Its not difficult.

Despite what you think there was a little hint in my "hostile" message.

Funny how no one in the UK uses the site too. Check the traffic - that's a large bite of the revenue pie you so desperately crave being wasted

I'll ignore the grammar comment.

I've really enjoyed the site and I wish Pixel luck.

But yeah, unless you have several niche sites no one's gonna make a living or even break even.

Well, there is an update of sorts on the site now.

It looks like it will continue in some fashion, which is good news.

It was an excellent source for easy to find and well presented news.

I hope it will continue to be one!

neither did i. i just figured the lack of PP stuff there was due to the more historical minis lean of the site.

In PP's early days there was an incident at con. It was reported as new at TMP and PP didn't take kindly to it. As a result, PP stopped posting news at TMP.

I thought that the news was all posted by the owner/operator, or at least a blog team. None of the actual companies actually "posted" there on their own, did they?

Besides, there's been tons of PP news on TGN. It's not like they're sending cease and desist letters.

Be that as it may, ridiculing other posters in public goes beyond the confines of polite behavior, even on Dakka.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

But it's ok to join other forums and troll in their rumours threads and constantly try to steal traffic, correct people and demand links back to his site where they aren't due?

He even demanded a link to his site for news from Games Workshop once.

Link 1

Link 2

Link 3

and these are the posts we didn't delete.

You really have no idea.

Besides, I was offering advice

Anyway, I'm done in this thread. I hope some mug coughs up and pays him before he deletes the site permanently in protest.

Offering advice and doing so with a club in your hand have two completely different overtones.. You can offer advice without stooping to mudflinging.. obviously, you've got a snag in your cap with the OP.. Fine, but don't air the dirty laundry here, do it by PM..

That's the first sensible thing you've done in this whole thread. Run back to Heresy Online and bloody stay there.

Personally, I could not care less whether TGN continues or not, the service they provide is not vital to me. I recognize there's no such thing as free lunches anymore and expect to see a lot more hobby websites closing down thanks to the recession cutting into people's wellets.

The supply does not get to make the demands.
