So if you field Dire Avengers and mostly Rangers/PAthfinders, what anti-tank should be brought?

I'm just wondering if the modeling aspect of building this army would draw me in (I already
have the Rangers and Pathfinders). Would I have to field the Waveserpent with the Dire
Avengers?

I'm interested in both 1500 point and 1850 point varieties.

Do you already own the dire avengers, or do you just like the models?

If you're going with a lot of Pathfinders (little reason to take rangers because the points for the upgrade are well spent) then I would suggest War Walkers for your anti tank (I personally favor EMLs) because it allows you to have a ton of presence and mobility on the first turn between scout and infiltrator special rules. Pinning isn't amazing, but with the amount of it you would have spread across the board it's certainly not a bad thing to have.

I really like the models.

War walkers are pretty models, too.

Don't War walkers collapse under a stiff breeze?

Not exactly... but they're not made to be tough. They are made to throw in some hate from backfield. Most popular war walker setup is either Scatter Lasers or EMLs though with snipers you won't need more anti infantry. On war walkers I think BLs are sort of a waste of points mainly due to the low 3 BS. You wouldn't 'have' to put your Avengers in a WS but they do generally preform best that way. Though if you're only going to have one WS I would say slog them, it's really easy for an enemy to single out a rogue transport and blow up the softies inside.

At 1500 it's easier, as you'll have less armour to deal with. Triple naked Fire Prisms would be nasty at that level against most things, but they shouldn't be your sole source of anti-tank. At 1850 you'll have a harder time, especially if you're running few or no transports.

I think War Walkers only really work if they're kept cheap (ie. EMLs at the absolute most), otherwise you expect them to do too much and they'll just disappoint.

I would go with the Warwalkers as well. They fit with the army as light infantry well with the rangers and pathfinders. And all vehicles IMO have way more staying power with TLOS now. Almost everything is obscured so that means the Warwalkers get a 50/50 shot at shrugging anything off.

Well, Dire Avengers should be transported in Serpents; otherwise, they die too easily.
Pathfinders are worse in the new edition due to the increased number of blast/ordnance weapons that ignore cover saves.

Yes WW are fragile but here is how i view them.

If they are hidden from LOS, and pop up into the open and max distance away from small arms fire , thats 6 bright lance shots
which are also guide able. I think the result would be really devastating.

Would I be fielding Rangers/Pathfinders in minimum squads, maximum or inbetween?

A squad of fire dragons in a serpent make a nice AT unit too. They arent very sturdy once they disembark, but they are death to even heavy armor.

Pathfinders do best in 5 man squads since either they get to make their cover saves and are fine, or else they arent getting their cover saves and die off no matter how large the squad.

A couple prisms as your heavies, maybe a war walker squad (use magnets on the weapons, walkers have so many good loadouts) plus a serpent with some dragons give you a force that can take on armor or mec very well. Walkers really do best in an anti infantry or anti light armor role, they start getting expensive to field if they are kitted up to take on heavy armor. If you want to make your opponent very paranoid about his armor run 3 prisms plus a serpent with fire dragons.

Eldar have a few good anti armor options, if you dont want to go with vehicles then a couple WL with BL and eml might fit the bill for you as well.

Why does my eldar army run three fire prisms? Because the rules wont let me use four in (regular 40k).

If I have the points I like to put a BL or two onto serpents, kicks up the AT and gives a BL that will probably hit. Plain old shuriken cannon if the points are tight, scatter laser sometimes. Rarely an eml, and never a starcannon.
Yes, I havent glued any weapons permanently in place on any of my serpents.

2x Fire prisms (naked @ 1500)

1x Falcon + shuriken cannon + star engines + holofields + spirit stones

5x Fire dragons

= 475pts

Anti-tank done. 1025pts on dire-avengers/rangers... Anti-tank is now completely independant from the DA's or rangers. You could happily build a fearless DA+avatar spam horde with a couple pathfinder squads thrown in & call it a day. Drop a couple of pathfinder squads down to one, add in a farseer to fortune the avatar & doom some dudes and everythings even better!

Farseer, Doom, Fortune, Stones, Witnessing (or Warding I think)

5 Fire Dragons
Waveserpent with lances and stones

5 Rangers
5 Rangers
5 Pathfinders
