We've just moved servers, so if you get asked to login again over the next 2 days then think nothing of it. If you web browser says web1.dakkadakka.com, try www.dakkadakka.com again - web1 is just a temporary redirect until the DNS settings update at your ISP. In 2 days I'll flick the switch to move everyone back to www.dakkadakka.com again.

As for the new machine, we now have a quad core Xeon, 4B RAM and 0.5TB HDD, so have plenty of room for growth. We were not quite at the painful stage with the last server but it was approaching as our growth over the past year has been utterly insane, especially with the added server load from the gallery. Now we have a lot more room to grow and dont have to worry about the server randomly choking thanks to another preemptive upgrade.

How much drive space does Dakka take up so far? 4GB memory is probably quite sufficient. I'm sick of tediously finding the dud stick in the irate HR manager's completely unused eight-dimm 16gb array... clueless with a corporate account.

Did DCM contribs help afford this machine? If so, huzzahs for them folk too.

Also rebuild the search index already .

About 55GB which is quite a paint to transfer when moving servers 3GB RAM is enough, 4GB is enough with a nice bit of breathing room.

DCMs and adverts are our only source of income, so thanks to all our supporters for helping fund the upgrade.

Ha ha I meant to do that after breakfast and forgot. Thanks for the reminder I've updated the code to not need it rebuilding in the future so from the next release onwards it should no longer be a pain thankfully!

any ideas why this comes up instead of a page every 5 mins or so?

Because the requested resource is not available? It's been resetting all night (or day, or whatever, you British louts).

The drop down menu in the gallery where you can choose 'same gallery' and so on - I've been off Dakka for a month or so and it wasn't there before - are you still working on it or something? Because it doesn't seem to work at all..

Oh wait. Okay I was just clicking on 'skip to next image' instead of voting. Still, it would be nice if both methods worked. Or if the link was appropriately named, 'skip to random image'.

Should be sorted now - was just the load of regenerating the search index.

Let me know if it still happens, I have not been able to replicate it since the search indexes finished updating.

Is there a how big Dakka's getting chart?

There are, but at the same time there are many ways to quantify it. I dont want to share the details yet, but maybe when we are number one I'll show how we got there.

Hopefully that covers it - that last crash (15 minutes downtime) was thanks to a change in server config between OS versions that made dakka run in 128MB of memory. Not so good when you cache gallery images and huge amounts of data :(. Back up to the proper level now so dont have to worry about that again thankfully!
