I'm sure in the near future we'll see a slew of Pirate themed Orks using the wonderful MaxMini Pirate Ork Heads.

I bought three sets of these and am planning to make some Pirate Boyz. Now, i'm not sure as of yet if i'll actually be making Boyz (for a wagon or trukk [also converted]) or if I should pick up the Badrukk model and make Flash Gitz.

Still, I figure I'll need some appropriate pirate looking weaponry.

I was thinking about using some of the firearms and getting some cannons (possibly) from some WFB sets, anyone have any ideas?

What would you do if making pirate Orks?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Anyone know how well Empire handguns from WFB would look (size wise) when compared to 40K/WFB Orks?

Would they look to small?

EDIT: Well I ordered some empire bitz, if the guns don't work out thats okay, as I did order some empire cannon and rocket parts that I think will work great for a piratical battlewagon. Now the question is, what to use as bodies for these pirate Orks? 40K boyz with some Green Stuffing? Orc Boyz with GS? I'm not too sure at this point.

Those orc pirates look great. I like the one with the bone through his nose and the top-knot. For him I think a naked muscular torso would look good with lots of tatoos painted on to give him a tribal look. Maybe a Gorkamorka body. As for the others, I think the plastic ork nobs bodies would be a good base for Flash Gitz as they are bigger and well, flasher than ordinary Ork boys.

You should definately get some of these:

It would be a killer idea, very original and it would look cool. But I have one concern, with there only being four head varations.Won't this make alot of them look rather similar and make the force a bit bland as they would look the same(this though wont be a big problem if you are going to convert there bodies aswell as then of course they would look rather different from one another). At any rate I can't wait to see them, hurry up with them I need a bit of pirate ork madness!!!!!!!!!

It's probably the biggest concern I have at this point. I think I can do some simple work on the heads to change them up. Obviously they will look very similar. I will probably only use the Captain looking head once and have him be the Nob. Some simple variations such as chopping off the pipe, adding a patch, etc might work. I'm also not limited to these heads. I think the Ork head with the top knot is particularly pirate like already. I could also attempt to GS some bandanas/doo-rags on some bare ork heads as well.

I've still yet to decide if these will be trukk boyz or flash gitz, i'm leaning towards trukk boyz. They'll probably be heavily counts-as troops anyway. This is just a project for fun.

I did order some Empire bitz. I may have wasted my money, but the cannon parts I got will work well if I build the trukk-ship.

Hah, i never noticed that one little got was a pirate!

On the ammo runt with two grots I could replace that ammo box with a treasure chest!

I might have to pick up some bare chest Ork bodies if I can find them. There is one with a chain on the biker sprue. Do Gorka Morka Orks show up on ebay regularly?

Well full speed ahead I say.

Can't wait for the first few pics.
This is why I also love orks as you have got such room to play around with fluff.Which can result in some rather original armies/squads.

Gorkamorka stuff turns up on ebay pretty regularly. I was thinking of this model for the top-knot guy. He looks suitably feral.

Most of my squads have their own theme, which is probably the weakest part in my army's overall theme, since it's just a mish-mash of different stuff. The fluff for my Army is pretty generic really, my Warboss is leading a Waaaghh! and has called for all available Orks looking for a fight to join him. So right now I have squads representing various clans, nothing special really. But I don't care because Orks like to fight and krump stuff, and who would turn down a good Waagh?

My next two groups will be these pirate Orks and i'm also working on making Snakebite Clan Orks using WFB Orcs (pretty simple stuff here).

But, I totally agree.

Orks are fun, because you can almost do whatever you want with them.

What about trying to convert some normal Ork heads as well? Add bandanas to them, maybe a patched eye here and there.

Yep. I'll be doing that. Even talked about doing so above

My main concern is how to get pirate-like bodies and weapons. I don't know if i'm good enough to GS pirate overcoats, but it wont hurt to try.

Greatcoat Ork bodies.

I bought 2 sets of these (for 10 bodies total). I don't like the idea of all the pirates in coats, as I think some bare-chest Ork mateys are a must. But for da Kaptain and da Best Mate, and a few of the other crew I think they'll work great.

Just wish they weren't so dang expensive (ok, I wish the dollar was stronger against the Euro)

Well I think i've decided to do a major Kit-Bash for the pirate battlewagon. I've got some ideas going on how to use the parts I picked up, and i've got an ample supply of Plasticard.

I picked up some models at a thrift store that was having a 50% sale. The models are mostly complete, except the Abrams which is sadly missing most of the wheels:

1:35 M1 Abrams MBT - I'll probably use the lower hull as the base for the ship.
1:25 Truck-Tractor (I wish it had the trailer) - 1:25 is HUGE compared to 40K but the engine on this kit is pretty awesome, and the frame of the model, including wheels looks like it will fit nicely under the Abrams Chasis.
1:72 B-17 (not sure what to use this for actually, might use it as the basis for a Fighta-Bomma)

I suppose from then on i'll build some decks using plasticard and try to make the Metal paneling look Orky but also like planks on a ship.

I really can't wait to get those Empire cannons though. I think they should be awesome, and i'm should get them this upcoming week.

Ok, small update:

I'm still waiting on the Greatcoat Ork bodies, but I received all my WFB bitz.

Generally all of the Empire pistols and rifles will look small in the hands of an Ork; but I don't think it's a total waste as the rifles are a decent size, as is some of the other stuff like the Blunderbuss, repeating pistol (that multi-barreled thing), and that really long Sniper rifle with the mono-pod.

The bigger cannon I got is a tad small compared to an Ork kannon, but It'll work great I think. I also have two smaller cannons as well, I think they're mortars. The Hellstorm rocket is suitably orky, and looks great - just need to slap on some ork glyphs.

I was thinking that the Empire pistols might look perfect in the hands of Grots though.

So while I wait for the greatcoat ork bodies I'll be messing around with some Ork arms and seeing how well i can get them to hold these weapons.

EDIT:

Next I want to pick up one of those WFB Dwarf Cannons, to see how it fits up against Orks.

Anyone have a WFB Dwarf Gyrocopter? It looks like you could use it as a deffkopta and it's suitably low tech to fit in with a pirate theme.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Made a test model, I think the WFB rifles are going to work just fine. Basically what I did was to cut off the stock of the WFB rifles just before the trigger, and then I mated that up to a shoota. I cut off most of the shoota of course, except the rear end which I shaved down. So it doesn't quite look like Pirate Orks with rifles, more like Pirate Orks with super low-tech shootas.

I need to get a camera to take picture.

A note on the MaxMini pirate Ork heads: They have a protruding neck, so it'll take a bit of work to get them on a body, I had to cut off the neck, cut out part of the backside of the head AND shave down the neck on the Ork body.

Also, these heads are more Nob sized than Boy sized. Still, they don't look too off on a Boyz body.

The WFB rifles don't look to small actually in the Ork's hands - more so it actually looks like they're holding an appropriately scaled weapon, instead of the super-exaggeratedly large shoota.

Still waiting for the Greatcoat bodies but I don't expect them until late next week.

Sorry for poor picture quality. I was using a camera I was unfamiliar with in a poor lighting situation. I tried my best.

This was just my test mini, to see if the Empire Rifles would look ok in the Ork's hands. The conversion is kind of rough, but I think it came out ok. The Ork's kilt is painted blue. I was trying to go for a freebooter theme.

I also tried to make it look like he was standing on a wooden deck, but I don't think it worked well. Next time i'll actually cut planks. I'm still waiting for the greatcoat bodies.

You can see that the max-mini pirate head looks a little large on an Ork boy'z body.

I'm also not the strongest painter either One of the teeth is painted gold, it comes out darker in this image. It looks better in person.

Thoughts?

Nice go. Even though I think the Orc/Ork should grab the handle of the gun...

If you want some inspiration, I'd recommend checking out the Mordheim Orc Pirates of Warboss Kurgan, they are by far the best I have ever seen:

Thanks for the link.

I don't understand what you mean by "handle" of the gun though - Can you explain?

Some weapons do have carrying handles...but I tried to make this look like a pirate-shoota (no butt-stock, just a pistol grip,)

EDIT: I think you mean just have them carrying the weapons down by the stock. I might do that...instead, I just wanted an Ork or too in a firing position.

Ah, I meant butt-stock with "handle"... just could not see it was a pistol grip on the pic, so it looked ike the butt-stock is just resting on the fist.

Ah, I understand now. Yes it does look like the butt of the gun is just sitting on his fist in the pictures. When you see the mini up close it doesn't look like that, but it's definitely not perfect.
