I played when it first came out a few years back and I liked it. I used a lot of the mini's for my Fantasy/40k stand-ins. It's a decent system with very nice models -except they're all metal.

They match up well with GW (since Fitzy is the main sculpter, this isn't a surprise), but I couldn't generate enough players here - so it's a dodo.

It seems after reading the website they are in demand, just not in my area apparently.

No madam, 40,000 is the year that this game is set in. Not how much it costs. Though you may have a point. - GW Fulchester
The Gatling Guns have flamethrowers on them because this is 40k - DOW III

Eh, don't trust the website. While I do think they're trying to make it work, the studio ekes along on little to no releases, and while the core rules are good, they also have problems.

The units aren't as interesting as they first appear either. As I said above, the rules are good despite the problems with special cases. However the units are all basically the same just armed with different weapons, but save for the 1-2 very specialized races, it's all pretty much the same. There's no big unit variation with special rules for each one, which can be seen as a plus, but is also a minus for people expecting each race to have pretty unique units.

What's good is that you can mix and match, but once again there's the problem where you

The Wargod/Avatar thing is pretty cool, but also problematic, they help differentiate an army, but still have less variation between two different avatars than between two commander types of the same warhammer army.

They also decided to start working on an entirely new game (Olympus) before their current one was anywhere near finished, probably to try and cash in on the 300 craze, but you can recall how long ago that was. I guess the stuff came out, and is compatible but there's still just preview rules out.

A while back they also promised a skirmish version to help with getting new players into the game, especially since it's hard to get new players into a small game with limited product. Nothing came out of it so the only way to buy in is with a full army. Sounds great for warhammer where it's easy to find players, not so much for a startup.

Also don't let the news blurbs of the second edition fool you, it's been in a 2nd revision for a while. Also, up until recently the community had been clamoring for more FAQ and errata, especially an up to date official errata for years and only now have they gotten to it.

It's interesting, and if you're willing to spend quite a bit of money for two armies worth you can get some play time out of it. But, don't expect much out of the company as it's been petering out for a while. They have gotten a good gig making other minis for other games, but that's not quite enough. Early on they tried to go full on GW mode and this is what happened.

This topic did remind me to pickup some of the minis for use in a setting generic skirmish wargame I'm developing.
