So I'm relatively new to Orks and have been attempting to make a bike for my warboss. I think what I have so far is ok but it seems to be missing something. I was wondering if anyone could give me any suggestions. Here are some pictures of what I've done so far, they're not very good but hopefully you'll be able to get a general idea.

Also. I'm wondering, do you need a base for bikes? If so, what size are should the base be?

Thats cool i think the base would need to be either a cavalry or attack bike one.

Ok, do you (or anyone else really I'm not picky) know the approximate dimensions of the bases? I'm being as cheap as possible and basically trying to convert/ scratch build an approximately 1000 point army from two AoBR sets.

Also, do the guns look to small? Compared to the guns on the standard model they seem a bit tiny to me.

The new bike bases aren't that hard to make. Just take a square cavalry base and a 25mm round base. Cut the 25mm base in half and glue one half to each end. Voila. Put a piece of plasticard, a layer of modeling putty or something over the top to cover the gaps.

I made my own 40mm rounded base (for my Wazdakka converson) from a halved 40 mm round base stuck to both ends of a 40mm square base, with some reinforcement bits of card stuck underneath - it wasn't hard and worked pretty well.

It needs an engine! and a foot rest! and ammo drums for the gun (too weedy) if this makes any sense.
the plasticard/rivet work is great! keep up the good work and kudo's to making a cheap/original army

Alright, I've started painting. As you can (hopefully) see I went with a very basic color scheme of rusty looking metal and some checkerboard. I've also written "FASTA!" in red on the back because I felt like it. Also, it should be noted that the bike is not as red as it looks in the picture. That's not to say that there is no red but for some reason the pictures seem to make the red stand out a lot.

I definitely agree about the guns, engine, foot hold etc and will see what I can do. I think for the guns I can try to add some more barrels and possibly some wiring. Footholds are, of course, mandatory and only not there because I seem to have forgotten about them. The only real problem is the engine. I have no engine bits and don't think I'm skilled enough to make one from scratch. I suppose I could just say the engine is hidden under the bike but that seems like cheating, plus its an ork bike. It gets a 4+ cover save because of the exhaust, it definitely needs an engine.

Im guessing your using the boss from AOBR for the bike. I see enough room around under the handle bars or even behind the mini. Have you test fit the boss on there yet? I too made a biker boss from total scrap(need to post my pics up of it lol) And at first it didnt look like enough room for anything really. Once the boss was on and situated I realized there was enough room for alot of things. Really all you need in an engine and then stick the exhaust pipes out the sides of it. You can easily clear the boss.
Also those guns are tiny. IMO for a warboss a standard gun... is the size of a cannon, then bigger from there. It just adds to the awesomeness. Good luck because that bike is just cool as all get out. Love the rusting on it.

The paint job did wonders. I was origioanlly worried, it looked like a tau or eldar piece of wargear at first.

The thing about the ork warbikes is they have lots of exposed mechanics...

Consider this - the Orks ride the Harley Davidson's (In style, not quality) of the 40k 'Verse. Look at a Harley for inspiration.

You don't really need to make the engine if you make the pipes, and some of the components, sticking out the sides perhaps?

The only other critique is the guns are too small. Otherwise, it's much better than I can do.

for the guns maybe try getting something like biro pen barrels, cutting them down and building a housing for that
drill some ventilation holes in the barrel

and we need exhausts, cogs, gears...as 2000volts said . . .

Using pen tubes for gun barrels works GREAT. Thats what I used on mine, as well as for about a million other things.

Well, I made an exhaust tube in an attempt to make it look more mechanical. Supposedly it connects to the engine that is theoretically in the body because I have neither the skill nor the space to put in an actual engine. At present I have made only one because I wanted to get some opinions before making a second.

It should be noted that any weird positions (like it sticking out to the side a lot) is fairly easily fixed as I made it from a bendy straw.

Remember, ork tech works on the power of collective ork will. It does not neccessarialy work by mechanics. The mechanics don't need to make sense to us oomies as long as da boyz think it works

Pen tube machine guns and bendy straw exhausts is where all technology is heading

About to eat your Avatar...

To make the guns a bit better just add another barrel to each of the guns that are already there. Make this "main" barrel out of a pen cap as stated before to make sure itz got enuf dakka.

The exhaust looks good. I would think about adding the second on the same side. Personally the bike looks a little balanced to be orkish. More unwieldiness and a bit more rust makez it betta. I would try and bend them different directions to keep it abstract.

I would also recommend making a platform for the Warboss to put his feet on. You could even connect this "stirrups" to the front wheel so Da Boss can keep his power claw and big hitty bar ready and deadly.

Dont use a pen CAP as that would look ridiculous in size. I like the direction youve gone with the exhaust. My only critique would be to bend the exhaust to go back just past the rear wheel. Nice improvements so far tho. This is going to be a sweet bike when done

You can get away with 5 man squads though only squads with 10 or more can have heavy weapons. CSM can't be split into combat squads but you can have up to 20 of them in a squad.

You'll probably want to get at least one chaos rhino for your troops too. It can take 10 marines.

Probably want you want to do is decide if you want to have an army that is neutral or one that is dedicated to one of the four chaos gods.
Neutral armies might include units dedicated to any of the chaos gods or just chaos undivided.
An army dedicated to just one of the gods can have a good themed look about it, Nurgle armies being the most obvious with every unit showing some sign of disease with rusted looking weapons and armour covered in mould and so on.

Sound advice there, new guy. Welcome to Dakka! Sorry in advance for pissing you off. I'm sure I will eventually.
Oh yeah, one more thing... lose the suspicious links to mortgage brokering and whatnot.

Done a little work. I think the main thing I still need to do is add the foot pedals and maybe some wiring. Sorry this took so long to update by the way, have been fairly busy.

I do indeed have a rider, hes just not painted or totally assembled. Also, how exactly would I go about making a bike base from wood? i know some people have said a halved 40mm round with a 40mm square but what exactly do those dimensions mean? Diameter? Length? Area? Circumference?

Im not sure what the 40mm is but the idea is get a long cavalry base, then cut a regular round base in half and stick on each end of the cavalry base

The bases seem to be about 3mm deep if that helps

Any ideas for making an attack squig? Ideally without greenstuff as I have neither greenstuff nor the skills necessary to utilize it.

Also, does the bike really need a base? Could I possibly get away with just not using one?

Yes you can get away with no base. Hell none of my bikes have bases. As for attack squigs, I see people use squigs, pissed off grots(see my warboss grot post) For my biker boss I used the banner pole from the nob box that had a small one chained to the pole. Works perfectly.
