A friend of mine runs an SM Whirlwind as the IG Manticore. My question to you guys is that seeing as how the manticore has no official (Not forgeworld) model, would this fly at a tournament?

The whirlwind has respectable vehicle size dimensions, and I don't think this is an unreasonable case of "counts as"; so I let him use it. And if the the consensus is that it would be accepted, I'd be quite tempted to get one of my own.

That's not something we can answer. You'll have to ask the tournament organizer about that.

The only rule issue is it should have a heavy bolter on it somewhere, other than that it's legal.

I use a WW launcher on a converted Chimera for mine.

Kid_Kyoto - well, actually Ghaz answer is the correct one: Only the TO can decide whetehr something is acceptable or not, as it is THEIR tournament. If they decided you must have true, 100% original WYSIWYG models for everything then no, it would not be allowed.

Given the whirlwind is a little smaller than the chimera chassis (if memory serves) and the weapon mount is quite a bit smaller you may actually end up penalising yourself - the weapon on a manticore is so large it can pretty much draw LOS over most intervening tanks, making it easier to get that -BS.

I personally would not have an issue, however I would suggest doing some conversion so it doesnt look exactly the same - lengthening the rockets in the pods so they look a bit more deadly may do the trick, as would maybe up armouring the prow of the rhino so it looks more AV12 than AV11?

A whirlwind is considerably smaller.

As mentioned, a whirlwind launcher on a chimera chassis makes more sense. And you'll be left with a complete rhino to sell/trade.

Alrighty then, tournaments would be left to the organizer. But personal opinion then? If -you- were running a tournament, would you let it fly?

If it was modeled&painted to match the IG list, I'd let it go. If it looks like it was just borrowed from some dude's Ultrasmerf, then no.

I think that about covers it. For now.

Agreeing with this, I doubt anyone will say no as long as you painted it to match your army and put some effort in your conversion.

I personally use 2 whirlwinds as Witch hunter exorcists and I've never recieved a complaint in a tourny.

North of you!

So long as there is some appropriate marking/conversions/paint scheme i would have no problem with it; just a little heads up would be nice

Edit: Im stealing this idea

What everyone else has said, although some people may get a little uppity about it, especially since the picture next to the "Manticore" entry in the book shows a Chimera chassis.

Luckily the more "up" a person gets, the easier it is to punch em in the nads.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.
