I was listening to a podcast from 'Worlds End Radio' (Mailbag episode) the other day and they were saying it was a great game - very funny, silly, D&D themed card game. I've just ordered the game (with none of the expansion sets) from Amazon, and am eagerly awaiting it to be delivered to try it out. I was wondering what other people thought of it...?

I've had it for about 18 months now, its a quick funny card game, although some of the humor is wasted unless you are familiar with older editions of D&D.
The game itself is more about luck than tactics, although there is lots of fun to be had backstabbing your friends.
If the jokes start losing their charm there are other versions of Munchkin you can try out as well, Star Munchkin, Cthulhu Munchkin, Munchkin Bites (horror one), and more.

That sounds fair enough. There also seem to be a tonne of expansion sets. Do the 'Star Munchkin', 'Cthulhu Munchkin' and so on only exist as one-off card games? ie. do they have expansions or can they be mixed into the original game?

I believe they can be mixed into the original munchkin although they do so much better with an expansion called Munchkin Blender (which I don't have). I haven't actually mixed any of the different munchkins so can't say as to how it plays.

Well, I've had it delivered now and played a couple of games with a mate. We loved it. There was just two of us, but it was still great. I've just ordered the first two expansions after that session. Great game. I might do a full write up of my first thoughts for Dakka.....

Playing to 15 or 20 makes for a much more balanced game in multiplayer. There's always that risk of too many Level Up cards and risk of one guy getting all low-level monsters. At least IMO.

Munchkin is a great game!
To play properly, you need ALL the expansions, and to send off for the special "The person wearing this t-shirt gets a special rule" t-shirt, special Munchkin Dice, Special Munchkin turn-counter, and Munchkin Playing Table!

ALL of them? I'm going to have to build up to that. I've got 2 and 3 on their way to me, but my friend and I are just learning, so we're going to do it slowly, rather than just buy them all at once!

I got three expansions and that was probably too many - my deck is huge! And we never use all the cards in one game.

But, isn't that a good thing? Surely it's better to have too many cards? That way, you're not going to get bored of seeing the same old cards again. I'm sure some people must play with all the available cards from all the sets.

My friends and I have several versions of Munchkin (original, cthulhu, bites, and booty) and we highly enjoy our games with any of them. We've never combined all four, but pairs work very well in combination.
I heartily recommend the game. I'd say that you don't need all of the expansions to have a good time, but having some variety can be nice.
Just remember the most important rule: It's not cheating if nobody catches you.

Yep thats a point, we do have the variety. But I wouldnt buy any more than three expansions. I would and may buy the other versions of the game though.

Fair enough. I might stick with the standard version for now. Am just loving this game, and how silly it is to say "The Duck Of Doom" in that overly dramatic voice every time the card comes up!

Munchkin gets me through many days at work. Mixing decks can be really fun, but the more decks you have the less likely your chances are to be able to double up on some classes or races and when it does allow for this you can make some really broken combinations.

I've been playing with Munchkin + 2 and 3. I've now just bought 4,5,6 and 7 although I'm yet to fit in a game with all the expansions. Majesticgoat, could you explain a bit more about which combinations end up being broken? Also, what do you mean by doubling up on classes? Do you mean being an ultramunchkin or supermunchkin and getting two different races or classes?

Munchkin is silly, and if you keep that in mind you'll have a good time. It's not serious by any means, nor would I even care if I won or lost (or try hard to do either.) I probably wouldn't even play it if wasn't drinking or something. Just not my cup of tea really.

i enjoy munchkin, though i wonder if the motto "its only cheating if you get caught, so be sneaky" is just how the local munchkin games goes, or if its much more widespread.
