The new processing bottlenecks in the gallery are frustrating, along with what seems like a drastically reduced upload speed. Thumbnail generation takes forever even when no other images are reported as in the queue, and it really does take a good five minutes for images to appear in the gallery post-edit. It was faster before the last update or so, so what gives? New server, crippling throttle? Or is the gallery just updating every time I want to use it?

hmm maybe you are just being unlucky. You might be uploading at the same time the daily backups are processed, or you might be uploading when it imports images from the forums. Next time it happens, make a note of the exact time (with difference from GMT) and I'll take a look. I have not experienced any problems and have not noticed anything odd in the logs or graphs.

I don't have any new pics to test today, but I recall the last two times were around 1800-2000 GMT+10.

yeah that is right in the middle of the slowdown period, was probably just you be unlucky at being in the timezone that gets the backups. I'm switching to a gentler backup process over the next few months so the problem should dissipate a bit.
