Subject: Scoring Units: How many is the right amount?

Hello everyone.
I've been playing for several months, but I've been avoiding any capture point type game scenarios. As I'm putting together my 1750 list (I've been playing 1000-1500 up to this point as well) I'm wondering how many troops are a good idea?
So how many scoring units does everyone typically take?

It is potentially different based on what army you play. But amongst my gaming group, 3 has been the magic number
I take 3 chimeras full of veterans in my IG army
all of my different space marine armies take 3 tac squads in rhinos
I take 2 kroot and 1 fire warrior in my tau armies
My ork opponents either tak 3x30 boys, 2x30 boys and 20 grots or 3x20 boys in 3x battlewagons
Some armies might take 4 five man units, some might even take 4 ten man units.
What army do you play?

WH, I'm flirting with some DH allies. My troops however would be only Sisters with the exception of maybe one squad of Stormtroopers.

I think 3 units of sisters in rhinos would be more than adequate for standard missions

At 1750 & 1850 I want the ability to have 4 troop choices, meaning two space marine combat squads. However, witch hunters have the ability to take large scoring units with 3+ saves, so 3 might work.
In general I want the ability to have 5 scoring units in 2000+, however I'm used to tournament play where there will usually be 1 or two missions with 5 objectives & extra points for scoring more objectives then your oppenent (minor win = 1 objective more, major win = 2, massacre = 3)
If I'm playing normal games with only a chance of a ton of objectives I'd say 3-4 troop choices should work for most armies.

It depends on your army. Of course, with scoring like Asugradinwa just described, my Eldar would be boned, as I routinely take only two scoring units, and try to contest the objectives I'm not controlling with wave serpents at the end of the game.
With my Chaos, my troops kill things pretty well, so it's pretty standard for me to take four troops units, generally one unit of noise marines, one unit of berzerkers, and two units of chaos space marines.
|
Why did the berzerker cross the road?

It mostly comes down to how good and how expensive your troops are. For instance Eldar troop choices don't have much killing power, and the rest of the list does. So it is common that the eldar just take 2-3 troops. Dark Eldar on the other hand have really powerful cheap troops (though fragile), and the other choices are not powerful. For them its not uncommon to see all 6 troops even at low points.
Meq armies troops are usually dangerous, but still pricey. The rest of the list usually contains more powerful stuff, but the troops are worth taking too. So with meqs you usually see 3-4 until the other FOC spots are filled.
With orks it really depends on what extreme they are building towards. They have the ability to take units that aren't even troops and make them troops for FOC and scoring purposes. (I am still bitter over Troop dreads not being scoring though, I liked not having any boyz or gretchin in my mek stomp list) Big ork mobs have the ability to control/contest multiple objectives.

Seeing as how battle sisters are your army. I would take at least 4. I tend to max troops in any army though.

With SM, I take 2 squads of tac, then split them down to CS. Hope this helps.

It really depends on the army you are running. For example:
My Mech Eldar run 3 scoring units at 1750, and 4 at 2k
My DW army has 5 scoring units, since termies are troops
My Orks always have 5-6 scoring units, just because hey, boyz + nobs ARE the Ork army

With Tyranids you can get by pretty easily with 2, so long as they have Without Number.
Almost regardless of the game size that is sufficient, but as with most armies, more is better.
I use genestealers as well, but they tend to kill things and then just die. I rarely even try to score with them, and often discount them as a scoring unit even.

For me I always take 3, usually no more, usually no less. that way I can control the one in my deployment zone, have one die on the way up the field, and have the last one (typically genestealers) grab or at least contest. To be honest, most of my objective games have ended up in my trying to contest and hold my own as I don't go against many deep strikers. I always have 2x20 gaunts (or more) and a full brood of stealers. In bigger games I'll max out at 2x32 gaunts just because it's almost impossible to kill all of that... It sounds like the consensus is about 3, which seems to be sufficient.

In a 1750:
SM have 3x Tacts. in Rhinos and a squad of 10 scouts, giving me up to 8 scoring.
My Mech IG have 5 mounted scoring units.
I guess I am paranoid, but I like having enough scoring units

I would say 3 is the magic number, for armies that have good troops (Tyranids, Orks) Then 4 would work nicely but you can still make due with 3.

6 IF YOU'RE PLAYING A SILLY STUPID ARMY THAT CAN'T SPLIT THEIR SQUADS.
42 IS THE CORRECT NUMBER IF YOU ARE PLAYING IMPERIAL GUARD.

If we assume that '42' is internet code for 'many more than 3' - what she says. However, since sisters are more resilient, you can get by with 3.

42 = 6 Infantry Platoons with PCS, 5 Squads of Guardsmen, and a squad of conscripts.

Any army which doesn't have a 3+ armour save needs 6 squads, or 3 if the squads have more than 20 models. Hope this helps with your army list.
