The Tyranid Codex say that Tyrant Guard field as Monstrous Creatures. Does that mean that they are MC?. Or do they only count as MC when attacked?. Or only when attacking?

Tyrant guard are NOT Monstrous Creatures, they just attack as if they are. It doesnt matter if you are a MC anymore for being attacked, as preferred enemy is different.
This is how a unit of TG can provide cover to a HT quite easily, by some of them being in normal cover such as area terrain, and not needing the 50% coverage rule.

Nosferatu, I guess I'm confused as to your statement about MC not mattering anymore? I know that the guards have a special skill that allows them to make it so that the HT cant be targeted, but where does it state that being an MC doesn't matter anymore? They have specific rules stating what they can and cannot do. Maybe I'm just misreading your post and you just saying that the Guard make it so that the HT cant be picked out.
Also, side note, can Torias Telion assign a wound to a HT when he has a guard retinue? The retinue specifically states that the HT may not be targeted, but Telion says that he may assign wounds instead of the defending player.... While this has not come up in a game that I have played, I can see this coming up when I get the rest of my 'nids....

Your post included a line along the lines of "or are they only MC when they are being targetted?" whcih I reponded to - in 4th ed the Preferred Enemy special rule did not allow you to reroll hits against MCs, however this has been lifted in 5th. This is why I said it "did not matter anymore" if they counted as MCs when being targetted.
They have a couple of rules: 1 being they stop the HT from being targetted normally, 2 being they count as MC when hitting things. This means they are not an MC hence it's easy for them to gain cover saves compared to the HT.
Their rule stops you picking the HT out of the unit, which you could normally do as he is a MC. Teloin on the other hand has a more specific rule where he may assign wounds, so he forces you to allocate at least some wounds onto the HT. Note - despite their rule do enough wounds on the unit and you MUST allocate wounds to the Hive Tyrant - he acts like a unit sergeant and 5th ed means he can now be killed, regardless of what you want to happen

I gotcha... I joined during the 5th edition (just recently) so I dont have the benifit of knowing the previous rules, although some might argue that it is a benifit in itself. Thanks for clearing that up for me as I was really confused. Also, that what we thought about Telion, but we were not sure so I thought I would ask as this topic popped up and it is slightly on topic.
Thanks again Nosferatu,

Just had a similar discussion on my local board the whole thing can be found http://www.runboard.com/bcomicasylumgamers.f2.t22
But the rule you guys are talking about is the one under Tyrtant guard and it says that they deploy as Monstrous creatures. that rule had pertinence here it really set me thinking... what did they mean by it? What does MC have to do with anything when you deploy? So it sent me searching, and here is the fruit of that search. The current Tyranid Codex is a product of the 4th edition. So I went searching the 4e rule book and I found the answer on page 84.
In the rules for escalation"only basic infantry units that do not have dedicated transports (so no MCs, bikes, jump infantry,...) may be deployed at the start of the game,...) So that is what that sentence was worded to do, it was designed to prevent players from deploying a TG with HT at the beginning of the game.

TG are not MCs, do not attack as MCs, are not targetted as MCs.
The only thing they do 'like' an MC is be deployed as an MC. But in 5E that is meaningless, so the passage is an obsolete rule.

although technically since they aren't MC then if half the squad is in cover they can claim a coversave

And that's exactly what I thought from RAW, but I commonly see them played as ignoring armor in CC.

They shouldn't (and don't) ignore armor saves, same way Warriors don't.
