Subject: Shotguns for vets?
|
 |
Fixture of Dakka

I am putting together a unit of IG veterans for tank killing, the usual Chimera and 3 meltagun schtick. However, a question arose when thinking about what to do with the 6 other ablative wounds with lasguns: do I change them to shotguns for free?
Pros:
Can assault after shooting all their weapons (yay?)
All weapons are 12" assault weapons
Cons:
No FRF!SRF!
Only have a 12" threat bubble
I gotta convert the things.
The rest of the army is going to be in chimeras or a russ, shooting long range weapons. The Vets and the CCS are the only units to zoom forward and melt big tanks.
So what does Dakka think? Are shotguns worth the time to put on vets?

I think shotguns would be a good choice, as they allow you to assault stragglers and CCS usually have more important orders to issue than FRFSRF. Also Space Marine Scout shotguns look cool on Cadians.

The only problem with vets and shotguns is that they have absolutely no long-range firepower. If you use them, you've gotta drop them in, so they get the max shots out of the guns.

If you are making them an assault unit, i would suggest giving them carapace armor to make them survive more, propably goes without saying but though i would just put it out there

If you're going to give them Carapace Armour, you may as well give the Serg. a Power Sword and Plasma Pistol to kill stuff better!

For you standard Vets w/ 3 meltaguns in a Chimera, Shotguns are a nice boost, but ultimately, not that game changing.
Usually, MeltaVets are popping hard targets, and S3 (either lasgun or shotgun) will not make a difference.
However, on the occasion where you do decide to shoot at infantry, then shotguns will give you the added option of assaulting (which is not always a good idea, but sometimes is).
So, basically imo, shotguns/lasgun for MeltaVets wont make much of a difference imo.
However, if you have a Vet squad with some CC punch (lets say a PF on the Sgt), then shotguns will play more of a factor.

I gotta agree with boxANT, that's a really good idea, but I thought that vets couldn't take MMs?

Yani the only reason you know so much about these armies is because you spend all your time downloading our ing army profiles is so you can get a little bit of satisfaction out of us when we get something wrong. Also, I am using the old rules, following your ing advice. Stupid advice it was too!

I think I would take shotguns for veteran squads armed with three meltaguns. Drop the heavy weapon and take krak grenades and a meltabomb. If they last long enough to charge a tank then they can destroy armor in both the shooting and assault phase. I would even consider taking a power fist and use Straken to boost these units.
If the veteran squad has three plasma guns then I would stick with the lasguns and also take a lascannon. They can pillbox inside their Chimera.

Boxant & GBF: Thanks for the input, I was kind of thinking along the same lines.
Taking it a step further, is a power fist worth putting on them, or just a power weapon, or even just a melta bomb? I have the 15 points to spend, but maybe a powerweapon/fist on the PCS (with 4 flamers for counter charge) would be a better choice?

A powerfist on the sarge might be fun and could help against some vehicles that survived the melta-gunning. I believe that a ten man squad will have a better chance getting the PF attack off than a 5 man squad.
Of course, that increases the unit price. But it would give you a chance against a AV10/11 walker or a lone marine.
As a Sisters player, I can tell you that a single str 3 power weapon is NEVER worth paying for. Especially for 10 points!

There are more situations where the Lasgun would be superior to a charge.

Not always and it all depends on how you run the list. You can double tap the las but not charge, or double tap the shotgun and charge.

At the loss of range and FRFSRF
So thats what it pretty much comes down to.
If your giving them melt or krak, or if you plan on giving them orders then there you go.
If you CCS is not going to be around or you plan on giving the squad krak then shotguns are the obvious choice.

Lasguns are maybe okay but they don't win games. On the other hand a charge at the right moment could swing a game.
