I'm Red/Green colourblind. I never really cared until I started painting, but now I have no idea what my models look like! Good thing my Orks are blue... So, are there any others out there? Any funny stories about colour-clashing miniatures?

In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion, because of the tremendous urge to conformity in gregarious animals, is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by "thou shalt not", the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by "love" or "reason", he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else.

I am red-green colour weak.

It's not too bad but I have trouble sometimes with colour schemes and make them too bright so they show up properly to my eyes.

Slightly OT: I used to do indoor rock climbing a lot, and had a good friend who was color blind. The routes you're supposed to follow in an indoor gym are color-coded! So he had to tap each hold with his hand and have his belayer call up to him "Nope! Nope! A little to the left! That's the one!" for a lot of the holds

A good idea with the blue orks! I actually prefer them blue, a young guy at the local store is doing his that way and I think it's very refreshing

I had to ask my company's MIS department to change to different colour codings for the new online leave booking system. They had chosen pastel colours I couldn't tell apart. I wasn't the only person who complained.

To their credit, nowadays whenever they make that kind of design change, they email known colour-blind staff to get them to approve it.

So do traffic lights ever mess with you? I know that even if I memorized the positions at some point I would be scatter-brained enough to misinterpret them.

Colourblind people can pick out camoflauge better because they have to learn subtle distinctions in colour. This applies to traffic lights as well. They are also different enough that they don't cause a huge problem. Anyway, they are always in the same order which is drilled into us since birth.

It does make video games a pain though. I sucked at alot of Zoombinies stuff when I was a kid. Puzzle games are a nightmare, especially when green and yellow are involved. They just look the damn same! It also means that I don't know who is going to die in Star Trek.

Depends what level you are. I'm at the low level, which means most red & greens aren't a problem, especially if seperate like on a traffic light. Colours that use these 2 colours in them, or some shades are a problem to discern. The classic pain in the arse is when computer game makers use green and red on maps. A large green area with a couple of red pixels on is really hard to work out.

Even now after all these years friends & family will still make wise arse comments, even though they've been told I can see that the grass is green.

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

When I did the dakka redesign I kept colour blindness in mind. You can see what dakka (or any other site) looks like to a colour blind person here:
http://colorfilter.wickline.org/

and can see a comparison between 'normal' vision:
Here
and red/green colour blindness of the same:
Here

One thing that is interesting is that there are people on the other end of the scale who are hypersensitive to colours and can see far more colours than the average person. The mutation is only present in females though, and I cant remember what it is called so cant google it easily right now.

Traffic lights have filters to prevent colour blind people from mistaking them.

Of course, if you only see in black and white, the filters would be no use.

Interesting. That sure makes more sense than my explanation that traffic lights are run by ghosts.

My wife wears some weird combos in her attire. After 9 years of marriage, she finally tells me that she's colorblind. And she's been dressing the sprogs all these years...
It's not bad until we get to certain color combinations, and it's just crazy to me how they look the same to her. I work with a lot of wiring; so actually working with someone who cant tell colors is just out of the blue. But we both just laugh about it. Sometimes we'll pick on the Eldest child and mess with his head about what color is what. For example, this week his cat is green, but that's a whole different story.

Hey Nintendoeats,

I checked out your gallery pics and your Orks look really cool in blue! Did you paint them blue on purpose or was it a happy accident?

Anyway, funny story. When I was a kid, we had a black-and-white TV and I loved watching The Smurfs. I had a huge argument with my sister about what color they were - I was sure they were green! Well, she said they were blue, and we eventually figured out that she was right, probably because Papa Smurf said, "blah blah blah my little blue smurfs!" or maybe we saw some at the store or whatever.

True story.

PS - Esp liked the Blue Grots!

I'm red/green colorblind, and find I have a slew of trouble differentiating similar saturations of red and green, as well as that ever-obnoxious issue of green and yellow, and occasionally orange and pink (in pale/pastel circumstances). My trick when painting is to avoid colors I can't tell apart on the same model, and to never have more than one color on my palate at a time, unless it's obvious, like steel and gold, red and blue, and other such combinations.

Things I've gotten other players to admit...

Yeah, the blue was an accidident. I originally did it just because I like being different, but as I was painting I realised that it really opened up my options. It means that I can actually put blood on them without my eyes bugging out for example!

Dronze, we seem to be in the exact same boat.

P.S. I'm glad you like my models, but they really look better in person. must find better lighting...

I'm in the same boat as you. Do you find it harder to distinguish colours in artificial light too? I find it can really screw me up. My mum still ribs me about the time she asked me to buy my step-dad a pair of black trousers as I was going shopping. I dropped off the shopping bag on my way home, only to get a phonecall later asking why I had bought him dark green

My seven year old daughter is constantly correcting me on colours too
