I made a conversion to function as a Chaplain. However, I used several bits to try and make him look bada$$. What I'm wondering is, would you allow something like this? I'm thinking that these are acceptable, but I may be wrong. - At the start of the game, I will declare what my Chaplain will functionn as, such as Terminator with Chainfist and storm shield, or just chaplain with Crozius and bolt pistol. - reason being, He is equpied with a combat/storm shield, and a bolt pistol that I glued a chain blade onto. Pic below. If you wouldn't allow this, what woukd you change to allow me to use him? EDIT: Yes, he is the guy in the middle, and yes, he is crappily painted.

Friendly game? Sure no problem. Only sticking point might be base size.
Clear something up for me... Terminator with Chainfist and stormshield? As in a regular Terminator? Assault Terminators can't get Chainfists, regulars can't get stormshields. IC in Termie armor could do this, I think.

I don't have the new codex, wasn't sure on the rules, and when I started never planned on including termies. So, I guess if I wanted to use him like that, he'd have to be an IC. Thanks for the help!

I play orkz and slap together bits to make cool models all the time. The guidelines I go by are as follows:
1. correct base size. This can really make a difference in assaults, and it's important that you keep to it
2. Anyone that knows the codex and looks at your model should be able to easily identify the weapons/upgrades that it has. You don't want someone to have to remember what something is "supposed to be." They should look at it and go "oh, that's a cool chainfist"
3. It should look awesome. That's just me, really
That being said, in friendly games, I'll use models to proxy all the time (my custom Wazzdakka model is often a nob biker w/ PK if I don't want to spend the points that game. ect.)

I wouldn't allow it. If you want a Terminator Chaplain, use a Terminator Chaplain as the Base Model. If you want a normal Chaplain, get a normal chaplain.

I don't like it as it just doesn't look like a chaplain. I look at that model and it looks like a scout.
If his armour was black or something so it was obvious he was a chaplain then I wouldn't mind so much re armour, weapons, etc.

Yes, but the problem is, it is a terrible conversion. It does NOT look like either a Chaplain or a terminator, and I would not let you use it. Don't like it? Play someone else. Also "The Finacial means?" You Honestly say with a straight face "I Play this really expensive hobby but I cannot afford to buy a SINGLE model?" Yeah. If you want to play, you get the right models.

It was first try converting, and I've long since accepted I'll probally be as crappy as I am at converting. I'll provide info on my chappie in a thread if It makes you happy. Also, yes, I play an expensive hobby but don't ahve much cash. My only source of income is lawn mowing, and in the Frozen North, lawns grow quite slowly. But there big when I do cut them, resulting in a big payoff.

I wouldn't mind it as a proxy while you saved up for a proper Chaplain model, both as a regular or Terminator variant. Any more than a few games and I'd be starting to wonder why I've been spending money on this hobby rather than just proxying everything. I do agree that it doesn't really resemble a Chaplain at all, which is part of the dilemma. If you could paint him black and maybe try painting his helmet so he looks like he has the traditional skull mask, then maybe. In the end, though, it's really up to your opponent. Sadly, since your model isn't really representative of a Chaplain, you can't really argue if he/she disagrees.

In regards to the helmet, I wanted to try something other then the tired old "oh look skull faced dude with a mace.", and it also reflects his fluff. You'll get an update soon in ragerds to the pics. His shield is supposed to represent his rosarius and his crozius. Automatically Appended Next Post: Here's a pic of him, repainted, minus head and bolt pistol. After putting on an old jacket and getting a pleasant surprise (30 bucks in a wallet I'd put there) I've placeed an order for a new helmet and plasma pistol. I'll post pics when I get those. I couldn't use spray apint on him, as it would have covered the details on his shield.

The base size is what I take the most issue with. Personally, painting it black with a the traditional skull helm (Death Mask? I forget the technical name for it) is fairly important, as those are iconic images of a Space Marine Chaplain.
Using that model as a proxy in a friendly game with folk you already know: sure, go for it. Using it against random blokes or with no intention of rebuilding another conversion later on: not so much.
However, it seems like you've already got your mind made up on the subject, and won't take any dissenting opinions - even though you asked for them. Also, asking for an opinion, then telling someone that gives theirs to you they are wrong isn't exactly great etiquette. By it's very definition, an opinion can't be wrong.
Also, Pennsylvania is hardly the "Frozen North". Just had to comment. I'm very sensitive about growing up in northern Wisconsin, and even I can admit that the Frozen North is really in Minnesota.
::edit after new pic::
What happened to the front armor? Are you just using really thick paints? It looks like you might be using Testors gloss paints. You might want to try a flat acrylic and water them down a bit. It will help keep your detail, but that's for a different forum.

Cassius doesn't use a skull helm, and one of the metal ones doesn't either.

Correct, because their models don't have a helm. Cassius doesn't really need one, given he's so bloody old and bionically enhanced any way. The other Chaplains without helms just left them in the bunker or left them in the care of their techmarine for repairs. The point I was trying to make is that a helmeted Chaplain - iconicly (take THAT spell check) speaking - should be wearing the Skull.

Word of advice.
If you can't afford the proper equipment to play, then don't play in any form of organized league/tournament, people tend to be over competitive in those environments. If your serious about playing then get a real job because it gets real expensive real fast. Never ever ever use any kind of paint other than GW/PP paints, and be sure to thin them down before use. Black primer is your friend. And for the love of god don't steal from any game store (i'll admit when i was 15 and started the hobby i may have snuck out with a few single models) its tempting but just don't do it.

The big thing to keep in mind when converting is base size. This really is your first consideration, because of all the details this is the one that really impacts the game.
In this case, as a stand in for a Chappy in Power Armor, it might work (if they can get that equipment... I am pretty certain they are much more limited in the new codex) but it won't for a terminator except with your best friend. Even then he might object
Really though, if you don't have the codex don't start the army. You will only bring sadness on yourself as you spend lots of time and some money converting cool models, and then find out they are not legal.

That's a really great point that I forgot to bring up. Getting the Codex for your army is by far the most important part of starting one. Unless you just want to practice painting, I would recommend not buying or putting together any models before reading and understanding the 'dex. Doing anything else will only end in heartbreak and lost time. Perhaps missing fingertips from accidents while disassembling your models.

Why didn't you just buy a chaplain with those thirty dollars you found? Hell, I think you may have even been able to get both the regular and termy varieties.
As far as "would I allow that conversion goes", it would all depend on how distinctive it is. I'm pretty laid back, but if I can't look at a squad and go, "okay, sarge, flamer, three regs, and OH SHI- a chappy", I might not be too happy with it.

I think Reds bringing up the point don't steal from a game store more then you just wouldn't brake the law. Gamestores have a hard enough time getting by and giveing us a place to play as it is.
I agree with most posters however, At the very least it's got to be destinctive and on the right size base. Terminators should be big, regular armor smaller. And he should be carrying or in armor that says 'chaplen' in some way.
