So anyway I am looking into some of GW's other stuff.
I like the books and the films so thought why not try the table top game.
So my question is,is a force composed of just Morannon orks a viable force?
Sorry if this seems noobish,I haven't even got the rulebook yet.
Regards
Thanks for the help in advance.

First things first get the rulebook. You can choose from WOTR, which is hella fun, or the regular Strategy Battle Game. Look at the stats and decide if you're going just for the looks or if you like that army's style of play. See if there's anyone local that plays and observe a game or two. There's nothing quite like buying a bunch of models then finding out you hate the way they play. Then it's off to ebay!

If you're playing LotR (not WotR), it's helpful to pick up Legions of Middle Earth as well.
For a LotR army, you basically need:
1+ Hero
<1/3 of models armed with missile weapons
Up to 1 model for every 10 points (roughly)
Taking an army of only Morannon Orcs is legal, but probably not the best.
Take some Morannon Orcs with shields and hand weapons as your front line. Add regular orcs with spears to back them up (gives you a second attack die since the spears can support). I'd take Orcs with bows (or even Ork trackers) for missile support. I'd pick up some cav to help. And I'd add a Banner for support. Then get 2 heroes: one with the cav and one with the foot-mounted contingent.

With LotR, here's some generic advice:
You need heroes. I think it's nearly a 'must have' for a cav unit. Infantry units get a lot from having a hero. I'd rather have 2 or 3 minor heroes running around than 1 uber-hero (like Boromir).
Some people don't include any missile weapons in their armies. I think this is a mistake, because it makes you one dimensional. I think you go for max bows.
Having some cav is a huge help. They're generally taking the place of 2 to 3 infantry models though.
You need some numbers. But, having nothing but a horde of cheap infantry isn't that effective either. So, you have to balance things.
The Morannoc Orcs are elite Orcs. But, you can easily mix and match with cheap fodder too. So, would you rather have 2 heroes, 1 banner, and 30 morannoc orcs OR 2 heroes, 1 banner, 10 morannon orcs, 25 regular orcs, and 5 warg riders (and this is an example, so it might be a little off)? Uruk Hai has the same thing. You can have 20 Uruks or 10 Urks and 20 orcs.
I'd look to buy a box of Morannon Orcs, a box of Mordor Orcs, a box of Wargh Riders, Sharku (for the Wargh hero), and a Morannon Captain and Banner bearer blister. You might be short some bows. And the Orcs can take some 2-handed weapons for extra variety.

They're not bad. iirc, they're a few points more than Orcs with Bows, but have 1 better BS (shoot value, same thing).
I think one of the problems with LotR is that the basic trooper is X points (usually 5-8), and for X+1-2 points, you get the basic troopers + about 2-3 really good things.
If you want to use volley fire, you don't need trackers (because you just hit on a 6). If you use direct fire, the trackers are better, but less numerous.

thelastalliance.com has some good advice on it. I stole this from there awhile ago.
EVIL ARMIES
1. Evil has the best characters in the game- ring wraiths and barrow wights. These should be used as support characters and to pick on lone enemy characters and vulnerable troops.
2. Evil can afford to have slightly more characters but still try to keep to the 1/3 points in a 500pts battle.
3. Always (as long as you aren’t isengard) make sure you have the maximum number of troops allowed as number is your greatest strength, you should be able to always out number you enemy.
4. As with good always have the maximum number of archers and a good mix of weapons.
5. when you have spent you points on essentials you may have point left to spent on more specialised models, this is where your mordor trolls and goblin drums come it, these models can come in very handy but aren't essential to win a battle.
