I was wondering under what circumstances one is accually allowed to edit articles.

So long as there is an 'edit' link at the top of the page, you are allowed to edit an article. If an article is clearly by one person and is labeled as such, it is good etiquette to sign your changes eg:
'Addition by Deff Dread red Edition: blah blah blah'
but if there is no clear editor then just hop in and do what you want. If you are just correcting spelling or grammar then again just hop right in. The usual forum rules apply (click the Forum Rules link in the bottom right of any page on dakka to read them, and any specific article rules).

It is quite straightforward, read the tutorials linked on the left of any articles page to learn how it works. You can also use the buttons in the editor to do the formatting for you.

If you want to mess around learning the article system remember that we have a 'sandbox' for playing around here:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Sandbox

And you have your 'own wiki page' available off of your main profile page (you haven't created yours yet, but you can off of your profile page) which you can do whatever you like with.

You could even copy and paste the code from another article (by clicking 'edit' on an article and then copying the wiki code that comes up) onto your user page just so you could try messing around with it.
