Okay this may be a silly question...but can you use a deathstrike to shoot at a target which deepstrikes within range of the mystics? The codex only says it can't fire on the 1st turn or a turn it moved...do I have to roll to see if the missile fires or does it go off automatically?

Yup, because while the Deathstrike missile has it's own special rules on how to fire, nothing prevents it being fired by the mystics special ability. You will however have to roll the Dice to see if it successfully fires, as per the special rules for the Deathstrike.

Asking for the wording on a rule we are discussing is OK and does not imply wether the asking person owns the relevant codex or not.

Normal shooting rules for the Deathstrike are roll a d6 and consult the chart. Presumably, it would grant you a roll (so long as it's not the first turn), but not auto-launch.

I'll quote the Deathstrike Rule too:

Preparing a Deathstrike Missile to fire is a lengthy and time-consuming process, during which the weapon is vulnerable to the enemy. A Deathstrike Missile may not be fired on the first turn of the game or if the Deathstrike Missile Launcher has moved that turn. When firing roll a dice and apply the following modifiers:

If the result is 6 or more, the Deathstrike Missile can be Fired. Note that a Natural 6 will always result in the missile firing, regardless of negative modifiers

[Effects of Weapon Deastroyed Results that are not relevant to this discussion]

So yes, as normal shooting rules apply, and nothing in the Deathstrike Missile rules prevent it being used so, it can attempt to fire, but only fires if it gets a 6 or more.

Although I think it allows you to roll for every unit that enters play, it's going to be more detrimental than beneficial, they deep strike within 10" of your army, you launch and scatter 4", and lose half your army!

Yup, does not stop it being fired. It just automatically misses and you fudge up the single shot for that game.

The situation in our game was there was a unit of 10 sternguard and a librarian deepstriking with gateway about 18 inches from my mystics..I got lucky on the roll and my deathstrike about 7-8 inches back from the mystics (we weren't sure if the unit had to be within 4d6 of the firing unit as well..) 'attempted' to shoot them (I thought it would be worth the risk of not having a shot at all =P) but I rolled a 1 anyway. If I had rolled a 6 the sternguard were about 25 inches away so no chance of a scatter back into minimum range.

We weren't sure if we played it right, or if the deathstrike could shoot at all.

It only auto misses if it starts below the minimum range, it can Scatter back just fine

Well, I wasn't necessarily referring to Gwar, there are plenty of people who argue with similar broken logic and post editting techniques. Also, it more like trying to explain the color blue to a blind man who is also refusing that color exists.
