For all our occassional/frequent (delete as appropriate depending on who you are) grumbling about GW, they do produce some good stuff every now and again. So take a bow GW for your Empire Archers sprue. Got the boxed set today and the first thing that jumps out at you is an orc Yes, an orc in an Empire box set It is a casualty model with an arrow protuding from his stomach. Can't think of a single use for it in my Empire army, but I love it all the same. The rest of sprue has a good range of options, but the stand out are the heads. The promotional shots suggested that archers would most likely hail from Ostland with their thick moustaches. Pleased to report that there are 15-20 heads with enough variety to make them look like archers from anywhere in the Empire. Lots of bows naturally, but also a few sword options for both arms which always looks cool. 10 complete bodies in total - 9 full and 2 lower legs with 1 separate torso. Therefore if you have a spare torso kicking about, you can have a spare archer too
All in all, a big from Flashman.

Good to know. The release of this box was pretty quiet from GW so it's cool to see that even this release got a lot of love.

I've been holding out for this kit until I can see the sprues or at least hear what's on them, sounds good to me so I might be getting a box or two sooner or later.

First attempt at uploading pic (bear with me), although looks like Brook has beaten me too it Automatically Appended Next Post: Huzzah! Success
Shan't bother with the full sprues as Brook has already covered it. Thought you might enjoy close up of orc and couple of bodies though.

The dead orc is a nice touch, pity that it is too big for the bases of those men.

Lol, orc hand is supposed to be clutching the arrow to his right (which then appears to be protuding from his stomach).
Unfortunately, until this has been done it looks like he's doing erm... something else?

I could make a Skanking Orc out of that body dead easily.
And the Archer's aren't the only good new Empire plastics. Flagellants and Pistoliers are lovely, and the Wizard sprues give you lots of interesting bits. Greatswords are nice models. Just not £25 nice.

Reason the greatswords are so bleeding expensive is because the boxed set comes with twenty odd torsos, ten per five men plus tonnes of swords, heads and extravagant feathers.

Is the back of the Ork casualty a finished model? As in, is the back just flat or does it have detail?

You can use them as Huntsmen which scout and are skirmishers. I usually take a unit for harassing/sacrifice.

Yes, the orc rests upright on his left arm, so his back is sculpted

I think I'll have to pick up a set to see how well they fit with some of the empire militia bits. If they're both scaled right then those bodies could make for a nice new look for a mordheim warband.

A good Empire player who knows how to use skirmishers in the right way can use detachments of archers in very nifty ways. Any bowshots (when they're not marching) or even actual enemy casualties are simply gravy. It's their use as a skirmish detachment that makes them worth it.
As a missile unit they're not worth it. Crossbows and Handgunners are better by far in that role.

As for the Archers being laughable. Well, they are a core, ranged skirmishing unit which don't cost a lot of points. Plus, they have an added bonus of being the Empire's foremost move and fire ranged infantry. Pretty useful against enemy Fast Cavalry, given their own manouverability and their would be targets general lack of toughness and armour. And yeah, they utterly rule as a detachment.
