Missionary On A Mission
The Eye of Terror
|
In This Thread we tell stories about last minute rule recollections, or turn 5 heroics, that won you the game.
My story was just a couple days ago.
My sisters (using lots of proxies, I am good friends with my opponent) vs his new IG.
Things are going great for me up until turn 4.
He outflanks a hellhound squad, and just starts placing models on the board, right next to what I affectionally call my "Canonness Fun Squad" which is basically my canonness and some celestians in an immolator.
This squad was about to get into CC with his last remaining Order-Givers, meaning his few (read: sixty) remaining guardsmen would be without FRFSRF, and be almost helpless against my sisters.
Out of the blue I remember "Don't you have to roll for that?"
"Oh yeah"
*rolls*
He then proceeded to slam his head on the desk repeatedly.
He actually won that game, however, due to all his melta-equipped tanks showing up 3 inches away from my exorcists, which I had thought were safe after they served their purpose.
3 easy KPs for him, making it 5-4.

At the end of a 2000pts battle between my witch hunters and my brothers eldar, all that was left was his fire prism and my canoness squad.
His fire prism was firing his cannon thingy at my squad. In fact I had deja vu, becuase this exact same thing had happened in our last battle. He had won.
He kept staying JUST out of melta range. As you know, you can buy Orbital Bombardment (but it scatters automatically), and you have to shoot it every turn. My orbital bombardment have been blowing the crap out of a hill, and had been useful earlier against some fire dragons. But on this fateful day, the Orbital Bombardment Scattered. 12". Straight at his fire prism.
I wasn't cheating, he saw the roll. Even he admits that. The hole in the center JUST landed on his side. Str 10 against AV12. There was NO fire prism after that.
I'm sorry, but I had to laugh. I just had to...

I was playing a 500pt game against a random at the local GW. He was playing Eldar and me more or less wiped out, while he was sitting pretty. However, I had managed to kill one of his two troops choices so he could only control one objective (he had forgotten that only troops could hold them and thought his HQ was holding one). He had his group of dire avengers kill off and take my only objective. However, he forgot to kill off the one man remaining in my PCS who was equipped with a flamer. He also clumped up his dire avengers very nicely. I moved into contesting position. Several roasted Eldar later, the avengers were either dead of fleeing and the game ended on that turn (turn 5).

heh, heh.
There was only one Storm Trooper left on an objective the from turn 3. He continued to pass his 'last-man-staning' tests, and was ignored by my opponent.
As it turned out he was the tiebreaker at 0-1 objectives held. Rest were contested.

To help you even more, I'm pretty sure 'Last Man Standing' was a rule in 4th edition, not 5th edition.
I can't remember exactly when this happened, but a buddy of mine pointed it out to me in the rulebook. A unit can't embark into a vehicle (read: Falcon/Wave Serpent) and turbo boost onto an objective in a single turn.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

I am assuming since the Storm Trooper was scoring, he was talking about a 4th edition game.

Aren't all troops scoring? Unless they're fleeing of course.
I looked it up, there is no MINIMUM requirement of % for a squad to be counted as scoring.
Killing 50% of a sqaud means the enemy gets the Victory points, doesn't stop you're troops from counting as scoring.

Storm Troopers are elites. So yeah, it must have been 4th. Unless he was playing grenediers before the new guard codex but during 5th.
The plot thickens.

was playin a 1000 point game of tyranids vs. Imp Guard. and it was a kill point mission, it was turn five and he had 5 killpoints and i had five kill points, nut the only thing i had left on the board was 1 genestealer, and that got me a tie instead of a loss. it was a giant kick in the balls, to the imp guard player, considering that ONE genestealer had just taken out a whole guards squad by itself.lol.

I was playing my Space Marines against an Imperial Guard buddy of mine back before the new Guard dex. I was getting completely thrashed for about 4 turns; just getting hammered by artillery and heavy weapons, losing chunks of squads at a time and having my dreadnoughts get immobilized long before they could use their flamers and fists. Things were going really bad for me, then my terminators dropped in. 2 heavy flamers torched pretty much any infantry in their way, and their power fists just tore through his armor. I came this close to losing a killpoint game against old Guard.
Here's the battle report he wrote up about it, with lots of pictures of my old and ugly models:

A good Deep Strike got my chaos terminators in to position at the last second to pop the rear armor of a hammerhead (w/ a reaper) while raptors popped the other with a melta.
That allowed my land raider to drive away unmolested and drop some berzerkers onto fire warriors and broadsides, winning the game.

Junior Officer with Laspistol

I was playing a Berzerker-heavy Black Legion list in a 4th edition game vs. a hot-shot Necron player. He was playing keep-away all game long with a big unit of warriors with a Veil Lord and some destroyers. It was a cleanse mission.
My bloodletters were procrastinating, and just refused to actually enter the game. Finally, they came into play on turn 6, assaulting his Lord and the accompanying Warriors, killing the Lord, and wiping out the Warriors with the sweeping Advance. That same turn, my Berzerkers had blood frenzied into the quarter that the Destroyers were controlling.
The game ended, and I controlled two quarters, and he controlled one, giving me the win.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

I had a good one last year, my favourite victory actually.
Final turn of the game, I had been trounced by my DA opponent (I was playing IG in those days), my PCS Junior Officer had just broken from assault (after being battered by a Chapter Master previous turn), and ran towards the nearest short table edge. The Chapter Master doesn't quite catch up on his Advance roll, but makes after me regardless.
Junior officer happens to run into a Commisar bubble, passes leadership, turns around and goes hell-for-leather back into assault with CM.
Amazingly, doesn't take a single wound and then BAM! Kills the CM outright with his powerfist.
I laughed so hard at that. I don't think I won the game, but I certainly won the moral victory.

I was dead scared of my opponents wraithlord (that thing had trounced me in the past) so I threw everything I had at it. Got it down to one wound. That turn, he moved his wraithlord into charging position...into a minefeild. Cue the roll of a 1. I laughed so hard. He didn't.

A few months ago, i had a friendly with me as Eldar vs someone from the local club [im not local] playing CSM with dual lash.
Mission: meat grinder [now call annahilate, i just like the title better].
Turn 5, both sides are becoming streched and depleted.
Both lash DP's are teamning up on my main fire base, and have to go through my twin farseers. He messed up lashing and only gets one dp into CC with both farseers. to my surprise both farseers took down the dp. Then in the next trun [mine], i shoot mind war from both of them and caused 6 unsaved wounds on the second DP, adding a vital KP to my tally.
Winning!!

There was this time in Dawn of War where both me and our opponent forgot about our reserves and played to the end. He and his honour guard won.
