A while ago I bought a huge box of GW goodies of ebay, including some Vostroyan officers and a lascannon team.
So I'm going to start painting these guys, but I know nothing about IG.

I own:

- 2 Vostroyan snipers
- 2 Vostroyan with grenade launcher
- 1 Vostroyan officer with chainsword
- 1 Vostroyan officer with power fist
- 1 Vostroyan officer with power sword
- 1 Vostroyan lascannon team

I would like a 500pt army to start with, so I can get the feel of it. ^^

Well to get yourself started like any other army you need minimum 1 HQ and 2 Troop. What this translates into is:

HQ

Either a 5 man squad (or)
1 Lord Commissar (or)
1 Psyker

Troop (2x mix & match)

1 5 man squad & 2x 10 man squads (or)
1 10x Vet squad (or)
1 10x Penal Legion Squad

From what you have there I count 9 troopers. A good start with a mix of different types of weapons, however you will need 21 models minimum to field a legal force. Your next purchase for this army should be some basic Vostroyans with lasguns to fill out the squads you'll be adding the special weapons to. If you take what you have already and add two boxes of Vostroyans you get this list:

HQ
Company Command Squad (120 pts)
-Company Commander
-Las Pistol & Power Fist
-Veteran Lascannon Team
-2x Veterans with Sniper Rifles
-2x Bodyguards w/LP&CCW

Troop
Veteran Squad (110 pts)
-Veteran Heavy Bolter Team
-2x Veterans with Flamers
-Sgt. W/Plasma Pistol & Power Weapon

Veteran Squad (92 pts)
-Veteran Heavy Bolter Team
-2x Veterans with Grenade Launchers
-Sgt. W/Bolt Pistol & CCW

Total: 322 pts

It's not optimised but it's a start, and you'll still have 2 lasgun vostroyans left over from the boxes.

Fluff for Vostroyans they should be Veterans with the Grenadiers upgrade
