All of the veterans upgrades say may take this or may take that, except one, the heavy weapon choice. It says replace 2 vets with a heavy weapons team with the following weapon. Now I keep seeing people asking for comments on armys that contain veteran squads that don't have a heavy weapon choice in them. Am I missing somthing? Or has everyone else missed that it doesnt say may, which certainly makes it seem like you must. I am trying to set up an army for the 'ard boyz tourney that is coming and would desperatly like to know if i must take heavy weapons or not.
thanks for anyone who comments.

No you do not have to take it. The rule is listed under the OPTIONS for the veteran Squad, so clearly they are OPTIONAL. The only things a Veteran Squad MUST consist of are 9 grunts with Lasguns, CCW, Grenades and Flak Armour and 1 Boss with Laspistol, CCW, Grenades and Flak Armour. Everything else is Optional The wording is confusing though, expect an FAQ some time in 2012

The wording isn't confusing, it is completely wrong. The way its worded in the book it would require you to take a team, the option being which weapon you decide for them.
Thank you for the quick reply and you certainly seem to be the to the letter rules guy around here.

I would disagree with you there. It doesn't say MUST have a Heavy Weapons team, and is in the Options (therefore Optional). But yeah, glad to help anyway

It doesn't say you may replace 2 guys, it says replace 2 with a heavy weapons team. Replace 2 guys seems pretty straight forward to me =).
Granted it says it in almost every squad so it is most likely unintentional. Still would be nice if they would faq it some time soon.

Isn't it under upgrades. I do not have the dex infront of me as I am at work but if its is, or if its under "options" then that's what it is. and OPTION.

So if a god-like being gave you a piece of paper with the giant word "Optional" written across the top with the sentence, "Go jump off a bridge." written under it, would you feel compelled to do it?
I am pretty sure you would argue that jumping off the bridge was optional because it was under the title optional.
About as clear as black and white can get. As for your statement I quoted above, you MUST replace to guardsman to make your heavy weapons team, not one, not three, but two and only two. This is not an option, therefore the word "may" has been left out.

Options are not always optional. It just means you have an availability to choose. This sort of thing is debatable, but the RAI are quite obvious here, and I have never heard it done otherwise. Sheer volume of belief I would say at very least it is accepted beyond reasonable doubt (all other doubt is unreasonable).
EDIT : "optional"

Just because anyone agrees with anyone, doesn't mean they are correct. Beware the thin line between what is "Correct" and what is "Popular." |

Yeah, they will release it at the same time we get the new Dark Eldar codex.
