I was bored last night. Spent too much of the weekend painting and burnt myself out, it was late in the evening and I'd just screwed the borders onto my display board work-in-progress. Devoid of inspiration, I grabbed 10x 12-point Dire Avengers, twice as many 6-point Slugga Boyz, and lined them up 24" apart.
Enough excuses - let's get into it, shall we?
Rolled for first turn, goes to Orks.
They move forward, rolling a healthy 6 for their Run check totalling 11".
Avengers retreat and do what they do best - shoot. At the bottom are missed shots, the middle row is failed wounds, and the top eight indicate that eight Orks are killed - the shuriken catapults ignoring their flimsy armour.
The orks call their Waaagh! and roll another great result of 5". Kicking up 11" total, they're well within assault range of the Eldar.
Eldar, with initiative, miss thrice, fail to wound with 4 of 7 hits, and the orks fail to save the three successful wounds.
9 remaining Orks, with Furious Charge and 4 attacks apiece, tell a different story. Totalling 10 wounds, the advanced armour of the aspect warriors saves most of them. With four casualties to three, the Eldar make a Ld roll of 4, passing easily. Probably would have been better if they'd ran.
Things don't get any better, as the remaining Avengers completely fluff their attacks, and the Orks kill 3 more despite their significantly reduced effectiveness post-charge. Eldar fail leadership at -4, but successfully flee to fight another day.
Well, that was pointless. Part two coming soon should be a little more interesting.

That's true. The pictures are pretty good, the models are painted, and the action is well-described without turgid and/or flowery attempts at making a story out of it. That said, a small skirmish solo-game would have been more entertaining.

As promised, there's a Part 2! I did it the same night immediately following, and in this case I've upgraded either squad by 32 points - adding a bladestorm exarch with dual catapults, and a Nob with 'Eavy Armour and a Bosspole (plus an extra 2 Orks). Now, not only do Eldar have a slightly higher wargear advantage, but they get first turn too! There are a couple of huge advantages for the Eldar going first, and it pretty much guarantees a win in this scenario. First of all, I can move 6" forward and immediately use my Bladestorm. This is not as doable in real life, because they are literally exactly 18" away. Black dice are Exarch shots at BS 5 - overall it totals 13 wounds! The eldar aren't going to be able to shoot next turn, however. The next major point is that the Orks cannot possibly attack the Eldar effectively from here - they get a turn to flee. The greenskins move forward 6", rolling another great 5 on the run check. Note this only works on the first turn, as the Orks cannot Waaagh! They could have used their sluggas instead at 12", but that would be stupid. I tried it, out of curiosity, and killed one Avenger in two shooting attempts. The Eldar now safely dance back 10 inches. At 17", the Orks will need another 5 on their Waaagh check to get into combat... ...but roll up a 4 instead, fluffing it by an inch. Now this is the funny part. First get your Dire Avengers up close, like spitting distance... Dont worry about bladestorming this many orks unless there is nothing else to worry about. 22x BS4 shots ought to be sufficent. 7 Wounds, the Nob saves himself with 'Eavy Armour, and passes his Ld test. You knew this would happen. Three wounds, three failed saves... Consolidate, ready to Bladestorm the next turn! (presuming you aren't about to get charged by four more mobs) Now that was probably the opposite of what the Orks were expecting, and a full squad of charging Avengers gets as many attacks as they get shots, albeit at S3. Either way, if they've just fired their catapults, their enemy will likely be softened. I hope this presentation was mildly entertaining...

I don't see why you would bladestorm on the first turn as the orks can't get to you.

Charging the Orks is always a good idea. Takes away lots of their attacks, plus the FC bonuses. Add Defend to the Exarch and you have a great unit to fight Orks with.

Heh. I didn't know whether to put this in Tactica or Battle reports, but I kind of knew what the result of the second one would be. It's a common tactic, and demonstrates that even under great run/fleet rolls the orks wouldn't have made it.
Whether or not flimsy eldar would have survived that long in general, on the other hand...

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

I merely demonstrated that 10 Dire Avengers can kill twice as many orks in three turns if not distracted. So it's entirely possible that 600 points of Dire Avengers (x50) could worry 600 points of boyz (x100). Got yer boyz right here. Exactly 100 Orks, not counting the Runtherds and their charges. Anyone got 20 spare Dire Avengers?

Next time, see what happens when you put big shootas or rokkit launchas in the mobs or add some Nobs with big choppas or power klaws.

30 Shoota Boyz are equal in average firepower (with a greater hit/miss range) to 10 Dire Avengers, for 150% of the points.
20 Shoota boyz are 66% as effective for the same points.
Eldar are more susceptible to S4 fire than the greenskins.
5 Point Big Shootas are pretty cheap but only average one hit per turn. Rokkits are even worse... heh. 1 in 3, and still wounding on a 2+ anyway.
Any Eldar ability to increase the number of shots results in relatively more hits that the same for Orks, making Eldar more efficient overall for pure firepower, plus they have Guide and so-forth... I figured in Waaagh!!! for the orks earlier, but it would make sense for either a Doom or a Guide to be in play... at least, if I'm playing.
The armour advantage of the Avengers even makes up a lot of the toughness gap. They will generally win the shooting match, and almost always lose the assault.
Giving the Nob a big choppa makes next to no difference here. He wounds on 2+ during the charge anyway, and if the Eldar don't run after that, they're dead already. Power Klaw is 25 points... Of course Klaws are good, but make relatively little difference in this scenario, with only the advantage of ignoring armour saves. Either weapon upgrade means one less attack as well.
