In the imperial guard codex it says that many different regiments use different versions of the lasgun, so to change things up for IG players, our group allows them to take different versions as well. These are some ideas my group has come up with to make the lasgun more interesting and to give it some greater versatility. These are meant as sidegrades, to be just as good as the standard lasgun, but comes with pros and cons. All units in the army must use the same type of lasgun to avoid confusion. These mods do not cost any points to use.

Cadian M36 Lasrifle: Str. 3 AP 5 30" Heavy 1 (Useful for dug in armies on the defensive.)

Catachan Mk 4 lascarbine: Str. 3 AP - 18" Rapid Fire Grants unit the "Move Through Cover" special rule. (Useful for high terrain tables with few firing lanes)

Accatran pattern Mk. 4: Str. 3 AP - 15" Assault 2 (Useful for mounted armies who stay on the move.)

Each gun is obviously more useful in certain situations, but is not as useful in other situations. Thoughts on this could be fixed, expanded on, or if its even worthwhile?

I like the idea, but the Cadian Lasrifle seems a little underpowered maybe make it range 30" heavy 1 or range 15" heavy 2 and choose which to fire as

I like it, heck I was going to say that the cadian lasrifle was the most powerful of the three. I would equipt them. Plus it is fluffy, imagine a sniper rifle, sure it is better at long ranges, but it takes a while to get it setup and to get on target. You also would not want to have a sniper rifle in your hands if you were in a CQC situation.

Somewhere there were rules for the three types of lasguns.....Mars, Triplex, and something else......

"I went into a hobby-shop to play m'self a game,
The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"
The Chaos gits around the shelves they laughed and snickered in my face,
I outs into the street again an' grabbed my figure-case."
Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."

We tried to avoid having multiple firing modes for weapons for more consistency and to keep balance. We actually did make rules for the Triplex that had multiple firing modes, but it was too hard to make it balanced while still being different. We also don't want the guns to be no-brainers. They're supposed to be superior for their optimal situation, but inferior outside of it.

Very interesting concept. I would like to try this but no one but me plays guard in my local area (that I know of) so no one would let me upgrade my lasguns for anything. Anyway great idea, see if their are any other variants or maybe different forms of ammo like different power packs to be had.

Here's a new one:
Imperial laser pointer - 1 point/model
Any units equipped with an imperial laster points counts all lasguns and laspistols as twin-linked.

"Each must find their own way. If those in our heartland had witnessed the savageries of the void as have we they would know this. The hand of each of the great starfarers is turned against the other; none will join their strength together just to to see their ancient enemies prosper. Neither should we."
