Hopefully by the end of summer, i will be restarting fanstasy. My goal is to get a small 400pts army done by oct 31th but can`t decide on which army to start. The people around me are all 40k player, so this is more of a display army then a tourment winning army. Here my ideas so hard for an army-

VC-pirates
WE-Autumn Forest spirt
DE-something with lots of Cold One knights

So basicly i need tips on starting a warhammer army. I have the rule book too, so i`m trying to figure which one for my first WFB. i need yours guys opinion. Thanks for reading.

I vote for: DE-something with lots of Cold One knights

For some reason we dont see much of them around despite them being one of the best looking plastic models.

Wood Elves.

Too many VC/DE players thanks to POWUH KREEP!

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

What type of advice are you looking for?

DE have incredible sorcerers .
They have nice battle force with useful units.

repeater bow cross bow are cheap , give them a shield.
Then they'll be able to absorb damage in CC .

Alrighty then.

Dark Elves:
Strengths:
Good Close Combat Ability
Offensive Magic
High Leadership

Cons:
Weak to Average armor saves
Expensive Points-Wise
Have problems fighting Heavy Armor

Conversion Options: Glade Guard can become your Dark Riders if converted, A great theme would be a Dark Elf Corsair Army, or an army from one of the six cities.

Wood Elves:
Strengths:
Great Maneuverability
Shooting and Magic are both great.
They can hit hard in Close Combat.

Cons:
They won't last long in Close Combat
Poor Armor Saves
Slight Learning Curve

Conversion Options: Wood Elf armies can go by Seasons, (I.E. Winter, Fall, Etc.) This can also be used as a theme.

Vampire Counts:
Strengths:
Cause Fear and are Immune to Psychology
Large amounts of replaceable troops.
Strong Magic Phase

Weaknesses:
When the VC General dies, so does your army
Often dependent on the Magic Phase
Not-too-Stellar Close Combat

Conversion: Pirates would be great for conversions/theme.

A Battalion is a great way to start out WHFB, but you probably know that.

I'd get:
Dryads for WE
Spearmen for DE
and Zombies for VC

All three are standard units in the army, and fulfill a core choice.

Disagree. Unless you're talking in a literal sense about Witch Elves, then the Dark Elf model range is decidedly unsexy (Executioners, Corsairs and Cold One Knights excepted).

Lately i have also be doing research on all three armies and decide to not have WE, as a first army. So now there is two to choose from.

I play both and can tell you that from a visual standpoint (since you wanted more of a display style) I love looking at my dark elves. They have a great uniform look and feel with a sort of elegant and archaic look to them. The armor and details can be very elaborate and suit almost any painting taste. My Vampires are more for playing and winning with but they don't look to unified with the fact that they are more mismatched and...dead. For playing do Vampires, look do Dark Elves although they are not that far behind in competitiveness.

I like vamps. Their rank and file troops lend themselves to quick, easy paintjobs that still look good when they're ranked up. Their lords, monsters and most of their special troops are really cool. You also get a lot of variety in your lord choices.

I vote for DE. Not just because I play them but I believe that most of their units look good on the table. Da Blak Gobbo said it better.

As to conversions here are a few - Dark Riders = Wood Elf Glade Runners + Warriors, Harpies (one of the few model's i don't like) = Deamonettes + Wings, Cold One Chariot = High Elf Chariot + CoK box. Many of the DE lords on monsters = CoK + beast. Lots of conversion potential, somebody has a good link on his sig but I cant remember his name.
