OK, I have been playing vehicles as true LOS, and have drawn LOS from gun barrels. So, I have assumed that a screening unit of infantry only gives a cover save to a unit behind it if they physically draw LOS through a screening unit. Therefore, a tall gun barrel )such as the case with a Valk or a Leman Russ) will often times shoot over a screening unit of infantry and bypass the cover save. Is this correct, or am I high?

Example:

Unit A (Grots) is in front of unit B (Boyz). A Leman Russ fires at Boyz and his cannon barel is very clearly going to draw a direct and uninterrupted LOS to the boyz. Do the boyz get a cover save? The only rule I found pertaining to this was in the general shooting section and it seemed to indicate that I was wrong, and that even firing over a unit they still provide a cover save to infantry behind them, but it was a bit unclear as to whether this applied to infantry firing at infantry, or to all units.

if your los goes through two bases then the squad gets a cover save, so going by this then i would say no, but any way why would the boyz in your example get a cover save as the leman russ's cannon is an ordanance weapon

In order to keep the game flowing at a faster pace, we have made a few exceptions to the cover rules given on the previous page, namely:

Firing through units or area terrain: If a model fires through the gaps between some elements of area terrain (such asbetween two trees in a wood) or through the gaps between models in an intervening unit, the target is in cover, even if it is completely visible to the firer. Note that this does not apply if the shots go over the area terrain or unit rather than through it.

If the Line drawn between the Battle Cannons Barrel and the Boyz intersects the space between the Grot models, they get a cover save. If it goes OVER the Grotz, they do not get cover.

Read the rules for ordnance again. Ordnance does not Ignore Cover, unless it is also an Ordnance Template weapon somehow. Even Ordnance barrage allows cover, cover is just determined from where the blast lands, not the firing model.

Right now I'm imagining the Slaver lobbing Grots in the air to "intercept" the tank shells.

They will if the LoS is drawn THROUGH the Grotz as opposed to over them. Unless it is an Ordnance Barrage, which a Leman Russ Battle Cannon is not. The answer to his scenario is "No, the Boyz do not get cover." but as people have been complaining recently about my lack of explanations, I went one step further and explained why they did not get it, and how they would get it.

My opponent got really mad at me for saying that they would not get the save, but I couldn't find the rule while playing so I said feth it and let him take the save. I thought I was right.

Its not like that would stop GW ... 1year later they might explain it works like a blast weapon you roll a D6 before it fires but they'd never explain it straight away... (to be honest I don't know why GW didn't already have this in the BGB.)

willydstyle If I wrote the IG codex what you see now would be the first draft before I play tested it and checked it against the other codex's. As a Life Critical System Programmer we sort of get it into our heads things should get tested to make sure they work before they get sent out into the real world.
