Hey all, since looking at the main website for Star Wars: The Old Republic (www.swtor.com) - it seems to have amazing stuff and great gameplay footage, a question im asking that "would it kill off wow" or atleast damage the population? once you think about it, WoW is eventually going to an end unless they pull out some crap out of thier ass - and star wars has nearly unlimited fluff to build up apon it seems like the right MMO, from what ive heard over the forums, the PVP *will* be balanced and the pve/quest lines would be great!

so thoughts? etc?

It won't. I'm not a MMO fan-boy but it simply won't.

I doubt it. Once you're on the fattening treadmill that is WoW, it's really hard to get off.

Still, I'll be laughing at the sad obese people playing World of Warcrack as I fry helpless Jedi.

WOW is like the GW of MMOs's I don't think so.

I don't understand why every time a new "big" MMO comes out people start asking if it'll be a WoW-killer.

Until something far more innovative comes around, WoW will not lose a substantial part of its playerbase. The only way I can see WoW dying out is if Blizzard stops making additional content for it, which I can't really see it doing anytime soon. Sure, new games will draw some players away if it's shiny enough, but generally speaking, unless the person was going to quit anyways, they'll probably keep their WoW accounts as well as whatever new MMO accounts they may pick up.

You sure you aren't a Bioware employee?

1. No real gameplay videos yet so I don't know where that is coming from. I think at best there is a camera moving through environments, the rest is cinematics.

2. Star Wars may have unlimited fluff to draw on, but you can still end up with really bad stories (see the Prequel movies for example). So that doesn't mean it will be good.

3. From what I've heard Duke Nukem will be coming out before Christmas.


WoW isn't a popular game, it is a cultural phenomenon. You won't dethrone it by being a different game, you have to be in the right place at the right time to capture the public's imagination. WoW (while solid) is not even close to the best MMO out there but that has never kept it from appealing to large amounts of people.

I look forward to seeing what Bioware is going to do but I'm not going to drink the Koo-aid until it is has been tested.

The reason it wont kill wow is that the majority of WoW players wont even consider another MMO. Most will be content with WoW and wont see any reason to change to a different MMO and lose all the progress they've made with WoW. And as long as Blizzard keeps releasing new content the action won't get stale for most players

No, the reason it won't kill WoW is that it won't have Arenas or Arena Tournaments.

A vast majority of WoW players now are only in it for the ePeen muscleflex that is Arenas. Hence the constant "hotfixes" based off whatever is doing way, way too well in arenas that month.

the only thing that will kill wow is a stake through blizzards heart.

And we can't do that until the release Starcraft 2. Then, do it if you wish. I'll have my rez spells lined up when I want a Starcraft 3.

i do think SWTOR will be a much better game in PVE then wow, PVP? dunno, they haven't revealed to much into that are

Really? whilst lightsabers are cool and all that i'd rather be a bounty hunter, failing that just re make Han Solo in the Old Republic (he was and will be always cool than Luke and his little laser sword) as just remember, "nothing beats a good blaster at your side"

Smugglers, Soldiers, and Jedi are three of the "classes" available to the Republic, with Bounty Hunters, a Jedi-equivalent and a Soldier equivalent for the Sith Empire.

Very interested as to how those will balance out, given that I really really want to play a soldier

The only problem with me is my Internet occasional disconnects for no reason. so that would be a problem for me.

Well I was umming and arring over this one, then I saw the trailer and realized at the very least I'll probably try it.

Since then I've been looking at every info vid I can find from the Dev team and have to say if half the things they are hoping for appear in this game I'm going to be like a little kid at Christmas.

If all of it ends up in the game, I'll be lost in it for an age gleefully unaware of the outside world. Well maybe not quite, but it does sound awesome.

It even seems the info released so far is managing to make my wife glace towards the game with more than her usual 'Pfft Jedi' attitude to Star Wars Games.

Could be a classic, but even if it does indeed turn out to be pants, thats one hell of an trailer.

This wont bring about the end of that horrific game...I WILL! Ill teleport into Blizzard HQ and slay them all with dual chainswords!!!!! And reprogram the hypo waves streamed through the game unto millions of users screens to make them obey me!

WoW will only die out if someone releases a comparable MMORPG for FREE.
