So the question is basically, what is the 6 man Las/Plas loadout for a Vet sqaud in a fully mechanized list.

I know the most popular choice right now is 3 Meltaguns. But 3 Flamers + Demolitions gives you a lot of flexibility for 15 points more. You have 3 Flamers for hordes, a Demo Charge for 2+ armor saves, and 10 meltabombs for vehicles. Odds are you'd even hit a Drednaught with at least one.

Or for 125 points the hybrid 2 Melta/1 Flamer/Demolitions also seems attractive.

Note, in the armies I've played I have a mix of triple melta teams, triple plasma teams, and triple flamer teams. I was wondering if it would just be better to spam an "optimal" loadout.

I think it is more important to cover all bases in roles than "spam." People spam armor types, not weapon types....

I find that for chimera squads its best to specialize, and go with a 3x loadout. I like to keep the meltas in the command squads as 4x melta is more than 25% more effective than 3x melta in my experience. That extra shot puts you into the (almost guranteed kill) area for almost any vehicle inside close meltagun range.

Plasma vets have been fantastic for me as well annihilating Terminators, MC's, Light Skimmers, and Heavy infantry of all types.

Flamer vet are very good, 1x HF, 2x FL is solid, but its not as good an no where near as efficient as a Full Flamer PCS.

For Valkyrie Riders however I find that the 2x Melta, 1x HF, Demo loadout is very effective. The meltabombs allow them to finish off any vehicle that survives thier melta shots while the combination of demo charge, heavy flamer and melta guns gives them a very powerful knockout punch against MEQs and Hordes alike.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Flamers are always good but there is no need to waste the BS4. Unless you really want the Flamers.

You could always take one squad of Meltaguns and a couple Flamer Squads.

The meltaguns are 100% necessary as far as I'm concerned. I like the demo charge too, but now you're talking about 130 points for 10 T3 Sv5+ models and that's where I start to re-think things.

I think overall the best loadout might be 3 meltaguns + 1 autocannon.

EDIT: I also like bigtmac68's idea of combining demo charge with Valkyrie transportation

I like 2 melta guns 1 heavy flamer, but regularly drop down to 3 melta if points are tight. Autocannons are also nice to have for the flexibility.

I like 3 meltas in a chimera. I run another unit of vets with plasma guns on foot, but the melta-vets earn their points back. I have yet to do so with the plasma-vets.

I think vets are best when equipped to fill specific roles in the army. They are BS4 and have access to a few solid weapon choices, making them great specialized troops. Diluting the special weapon content by mixing and matching just makes them ok at doing multiple things though, as opposed to really good at doing one thing.

The Doctorines encourage you to have a squad fulfill a specific role. For example:

3x snipers
Hvy Bolter/Autocannon
Foward Sentries

Stick them on an objective in area terrain and now you have a pretty solid little firebase that can threaten tough infantry at range.

3x grenade launchers+grenadiers would be a pretty versatile loadout.

Heavy flamers just cost too much to be worth it, in my opinion, and its more cost effective to have PCS have the 4x flamer loadout.

There are no points in 40k for being cute or clever. The first two troops choices I take in 1850 are melta-vets. Only then do I think about plasma vets, infantry platoons, etc. I run executioners, so I don't need the plasma in my vets.

The demo charge is a nice bonus, but they add up in a hurry, points wise, and the meltabombs are of questionable use.

I love my 3 x plasma with a las cannon.

Sit in a chimer on your objective and shoot like hell. The chimera shoots well too plus makes the vets really resilient.

For advancing on an objective, 3 melta does the trick.
