What KIND of force do you want?

Do you want a machine based force (Big meks, Dreds and kans)? Biker Nobs? Foot sloggers? Kult of Speed (vehicle based)?

Give us more info if what you want to do, and we can give you a better list of what you should have.

Foot slogging at this point and time is not as viable as it once was.

If you want this route, I would suggest 3 Units of 20 slugga boys in Battlewagons (roughly 260pts per group and takes your 3 heavy spots), Ghaz (220pts), and Stormboyz/Copta's for your FA slots.

If you go pure footslogging, you'll have nothing to reach the back lines of your opponent and they will just shoot you down.

Go to the army list section of the forums. I've hi-jacked the entire first page of the forums there with Ork army lists that various people have posted. Read and learn padawan.

DoP, you might know this: are the Ork Tacticas any good? Are they updated for 5th edition?

The Ork bok was made before 5th Ed but 5th Ed was considered while it was being made as the Codex goes along with 5th Rules.

Ork tactics are fine for 5th and really competitive depending on what army you face. You can have 180 Boyz footslogging across the board, Have the boyz mounted in Trukks and Battlewagons and charge in like Speed Freaks. You can also do Deffwing, (all Meganob army) or Ravensquig (all Bike Army) or any thing you can come up with. Some will just be more viable against certain armies than others.

The important thing is that boyz never lose because
If they win they don't lose
If they run away they get to come back and win
If they die it doesn't count

Under Articles choose tactica, then 40K tactica, then Ork tactica. And read it through. There is some great info there. It will still be up to you to find what you like in your army but it's a great place to start.

Yes, Assault at Black Reach is a great starting point! Trade off the Space Marines for more Orks from AoBR. There are plenty of people willing to do that. Footslogging is the fastest way to start simply because of AoBR.

I don't know what kind of gaming experience you have so if this doesn't apply, forget it.

Take actual tactical advice for what it is. Sometimes the advice on here can be spotty and I suspect comes from people who read a lot of the codex and rules but don't actually play very often or it comes from a style they have worked out for themselves over time. Not saying they aren't trying to be helpful but just play the game even if its only a 500pt battle...

My advice for learning what kind of Ork Army to build and play:

Use Advice

I disagree strongly. kommandos w/ snikrot. Flanking deff koptas, deepstriking storm boyz, etc. can all reach back lines effectively...

Masses of running boyz cross the table rather quickly as well, far quicker then peopel think.

I have had and seen footslogging armies do very well in 5th thus far...

I have to agree. I think people don't like it because they don't like all of the casualties associated with it.

Agreed. Some people have a hard time accepting that you are buying those 130+ footslogging boyz with the knowledge that a certain percentage ARE going to die getting to grips with the enemy via a full frontal assault. What I have found however is that the numbr I have left is usually able to get the job done once i get the enemy in choppa range due to sheer number of attacks of even smallish units of slugga/choppa boyz...
