I was reading the Vanguard entry earlier. I wanted to give them each (or most of them) a pair of lightning claws to go with shrike, and i noticed it didn't have an option for that. But as i was reading, when it says 'replace bolt pistol and/or chainsword, does that mean i can replace the pistol with a claw then go and replace the chainsword with another claw?

The "and/or" option does exactly mean: replace one or both of them. So yes, possible to exchange both weapons for claws.

But as someone used to Corax' boys and shrike, i would drop the idea of pricey Vanguard and keep the points in check.
A few twin LC models may work, too many are just tactical nonsense.

im really only going to use the vanguard in apocalypse, and thanks for that i never really understood if i could do that or not,
the lightning claws is more for fluff, as my chapter is a succesor to the raven guard and use a lot of lightning claws, and in certain circumstances the sergeants of the sternguard and vanguard come together with my captain (counts-as shrike) with lightning claws (which is what the vanguard would represent)
