I was just wondering whats the difference in moderating power/hierarchy between the Administrator, Moderator, Article Moderator and DCM? I think I know what the first two mean but I have no clue about the last two insofar as what moderator gifts Yak has chosen to bestow on them.

If it's any implication Green Bow Fly is a DCM and hasn't been banned yet, despite having probably over 500 posts that were just "+1". Whether that means DCM means you are more easily forgiven or this forum just has bad mods I have no idea.

Kind of, Malfred is the highest level moderator on right now and he is only an Article Mod, does that mean he is just a glorified average user or a mod with a longer name?

It means they only ban DCM if they break into Yakfaces house and violate his dogs, up to that go nuts.</Sarcasm>
The official Line is "DCMs have no special privileges. We've even permanently banned one." What the Unofficial Line is is up to you to decide.

As for the comment on the mods, I'll just stay out of trouble and say, like all forums, there are good ones and there are bad ones.

Yes, people need what is known as "Sleep" or do things called "Jobs".

Anyway the difference is power is:
Admin: Can ban ANYONE, Mods included, Own the Forum (there's Three IIRC, Yakface who owns it, legoburner who does the Magic, and MachineSpirit who is a Bot) and can Delete, lock and Edit threads at will.
Mods: Can Ban Non-Mods (from my experience Moderating other forums) and can Delete, lock and Edit threads at will.
Article Mod: Responsible for maintaining the Article System
DCM: Paid money to get a Dakkadakka Email and not get banned regardless of Behaviour. </Bitter>

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Garret, I swear I have mentally facepalmed every single post you have made.

That was no exception.

I was a DCM for a couple of months... I'd certainly say you can get away with next to anything in the DCM thread, but breaking general rules in the forums tends to generate warning posts either way. I have never received a warning PM, but we can only assume that GBF has gotten a few. Keep bumping alerts on his +1 posts if you really care that much - he garners about as much respect as a fly in the first place. Stelek ('Saint Elek') was a martyr, and like most martyrs, his legacy can be better appreciated in retrospect (nice ideas, terribly inflammatory execution).

Being a DCM doesn't protect a member from being banned. It just lets you into the DCM forum where the rules are a bit looser than the public forums. We still prevent outright porn, racism and so on from being posted in the DCM forum.

Article Mods can edit articles, I think. They can't do other mod powers. I don't know if they can go into the DCM forum.

Moderators like me can do anything except an IP ban. We can change anything in a user's profile including his password, flag, sig, and posting privileges to let us suspend users.

From a social viewpoint we uphold the rules set down by the admins to the best of our ability. In cases where we are not confident about the appropriate response we will bring the issue to the attention of the other moderators and Yakface/Legoburner.

The administrators can do IP bans as well as everything else, and they own the site so moderators defer to their judgement about difficult cases. (Technically it's Legoburner who does the IP bans since he controls the server software.)

The mod crew are naturally enough on the same wavelength as the admins, since we were selected by the admins and already existing moderators for our adherence to the site's rules and morals.

Clearly there are differences between mods -- we are not clones -- but we work as a team so I think things run pretty smoothly.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

It's amazing the kind of myths believed about the DCM's.

To add wood to fire - DCM's also all get magical ponies that can fly through the air. We also can all shoot lasers from our eyes and bend space-time.

On Topic -

I think Article Mod's have access to DCM - at least Malf does. Dunno if it's 'cause he's a A.Mod or because he donated, though.

Frankly, I'd wish Yak would stop sending all those chicks. They eat all that food, the clean-up after them, and the cheeping at 6am keeps waking me up. There's a reason that chicks make a bad Easter gift. I guess that I should be grateful he's not just sending eggs, then you'd have to incubate them too.

I think the best part of all this is watching one of the biggest trolls on Dakka, who seemingly is immune from any sanction himself, calling out the Mods for unfair treatment. Replace all of Gwar's insane ranting about "DCM members get special treatment" with "Gwar gets special treatment," and I'd agree.

Honestly, I have no idea. To the best of my recollection, I've never gotten a warning. I'd like to continue that streak. I don't worry about what GBF does. I don't worry about what other posters do either. It's beyond my control, and I'm not responsible for either their actions or cleaning up any mess that they make. I have better things to do with my time than worry about someone inflating their post count. Short of a personal attack (even a veiled personal attack), which is against forum rules, how does what one poster does affect you? It doesn't. If they inflate their post count, so what? There's posters on here with a limited post count, that I respect a lot. There's posters on here with a lot of posts that I ignore. And there's posters here that I ignore all the non-sense from, but then analyze their tactics because they have the record to back up their play.

I don't know if the Mods have ever taken action against GBF or anyone else (except for Stelek who did get the lifetime ban). And I don't care if they do or do not take action against a user, because it doesn't affect me.

As far as I know, being a DCM is not a 'get out of jail for free' card. I sent Yakface some cash this year to become a DCM, because I've been around BBS (that's Bulletin Board System) since about 1990 when you had - gasp - multiple phone lines! Sometimes, the BBS didn't even have a hunt group, so if the first line was busy, you had to try the second one, etc. It's not cheap to maintain a website or BBS. And I doubt that the advertising helps yak turn a profit (and if it does, good for him). I donated because I was hanging out here enough (too much at times), that I wanted to help support the board. Plus, I had money sitting in my paypal account from a trade, so it was 'free money' to me and that didn't hurt either.

Yeah, because the Multiple Suspensions I have gotten over positively trivial things and 3 Week ban (albeit reduced on Appeal) from Iorek for Agreeing with Ghaz, all indicate I get Special treatment...

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

DCMs are people who have decided to make improving the quality of dakka's conversation a priority in their lives, for whatever reason that may be.

Personally I think Gwar!'s (your?) signature is one of the more clever things we've had here in a while and has helped to spice up the post-Stelek era.

That and many DCMs are regarded as "trusted users". Not necessarily cronyism but rather ... adulthood? That does of course include GBF, who is in his 50's by the way.

Thank you for the comment. My sig actually started as a sort of a joke, when 2 people in different threads said the same thing (the 100% quote). Since then I have tried to help people whenever I can in their rules questions.

Much like a handful of posts helping noobs with rules questions (when not being an intractable ass when conflating your interpretation of words as the only possible interpretation) does not make up for the bulk of your posts being trollish attention seeking, one or two nasty posts of mine don't change who I am.

In short: you are an awful poster who occasionally isn't. I'm a good poster who occasionally isn't. It doesn't change what we each are.

And in my post, I mentioned that you tend to deflect any and all criticism by immediately crying out about personal attacks. True to form, you cried like the little crybaby you've consistently shown yourself to be.

You fail to see that Personal attacks do not include every negative comment one person can make about another. the rule is to be polite, and one person can politely point out the faults of another, particularity when relevant to the overall good of the community. So, when a person is rude or impolite, that's a violation, but merely pointing out, with evidence, a pattern of behavior that is indicative of a status, that's not a personal attack. That's simply being accurate.

Like you often do, you're again falling back on the old "keep repeating a statement until it simply appears true" tactic. If I'm wrong, show me the evidence. And yes, you have a lot of people that have said, at least once, that you were correct. Of course the sheer distaste evidenced even in the comments of support I think is telling.
