There's a guy over in painting and modelling postulating about having Karl Franz on foot in a regiment of Greatswords (clearly been reading the fluff).

I suggested this wouldn't work tactically as enemy elite regiments would just avoid his unit like Nurgle's Rot. Am I wrong? Which of the five options for Karl Franz is the most effective?

On Foot
Pros - Cheap way to field Empire's best character, Can hide within an large infantry regiment
Cons - Will be avoided, no nasty beasty to claw things apart

On Barded Warhorse
Pros - Still fairly cheap (on an additional 21 points), Can hide within a cavalry regiment (most likely Inner Circle Knights), Can be accompanied by Ludwig Schwarzhelm for further protection, Quite mobile
Cons - Will only be able to cover so much of the battlefield

On Pegasus
Pros - Relatively cheap way to get him airborne
Cons - Pegasus not a tough target to pick off i.e. he will probably be needing a parachute by Turn 2.

On Deathclaw
Pros - Airborne, Deathclaw is a big nasty beasty adding some weight in close combat, If Emperor dies, Deathclaw will hang around to do more damage
Cons - Expensive, screams "shoot at me with everything you've got" (how's that parachute coming along?)

On Imperial Dragon
Pros - Even bigger flying nasty beasty... that breathes fire (need I go on?)
Cons - Very expensive, also exhibits great desire to be shot at although with a lot more enthusiasm

To me, Barded Warhorse seems the best option. What are your thoughts?

Dragon all the way, it may be expensive but lets face it he will win you games, especially if hes running around toting Ghal Miraz.

Even if he was on foot, Ludwig could join him in a unit.

If he was on a barded warhorse, he could hide in a big infantry squad.

I would perfer the barded warhorse personally.

skyth got the right of it, characters on horseback can join infantry units and not be targeted seperately by regular shooting (sniping HLRs and certain spells are still possible).

I like the option of KF on a Warhorse. Gives him some nice mobility and a better armour save and leaves points for more troops. Also, when he's smack in the middle of the combat line he can actually use that nice enhanced Ld radius of his.

Also:
Dragon PRO: The ONLY character on dragon not to take up an extra hero slot, This is the only way I have seen him run in games 2500 and above.

Warhorse PRO: Barded so +2 to armour save, also look out sir still works, this is the only way I have seen him run in games under 2500 pts.

I'd use a dragon, only because it gives me an excuse to buy and paint one of those fine things.

You can also field Malekith on foot.

Dragon. I used one at ard boys with ghal maraz. Even if the opponent fires everything at hhim it is still hard to kill either. Karl with his ward save and dragon with its 6? wounds.

where can you get dragon for Karl Franz? i mean which box you have to buy?

High elves have the best looking one.

They don't make one. You could use the body from the Old KF and Grimclaw box, or just come up with your own upper body. High Elf dragon is the prettiest, but it may look a little too fancy for an Empire army. I would say an older DE or HE dragon.

I think the High Elf dragon is fine if you can ditch the High Elf finery. Reins and chair can go easily, but the arm and leg guards would be harder to resolve. Front legs could be replaced I guess, but you need the back ones for their hold on the rock.

BTW i have just started fantasy and thought after a 2000pts game against dark elves with a unit exactly like this and smashed through most of his units!!!

It may not be the best of tactics but i thought i worked, the unit also had a battle standard in so the unit would be a command base giving all units within 18" a leadership of 10 that is rerollable!!! To me that sounds rather good

Also i have now decided to use a tooled up empire general instead in my 2000pts because i can fit in another cannon and commands for other units!
