I am trying to decide which army to run.

I suspect in the Preliminary round I will see a lot of MEQ armies, and possibly an IG army or two. There might be 1-2 Tyranid, Daemon, Eldar and Necron armies each. And there are always a few surprise armies that show up as well. But I suspect most will be Marines or Chaos of one flavor or another.

So please vote in the poll, and if you are so inclined, please leave your reasoning behind your decision.

Thanks.

Chaos

I have been playing my Chaos exclusively for the past several months, and the following is my 1,850 list tooled up:

Abaddon - 275
Lord - MOK, juggernaut, daemon weapon, plasma pistol - 185

4 terminators:Champ w/ MOK, chain fist; 2xmelta/powerfist; 1 heavy flamer - 210
Land Raider (DT) - 220

2x10 Berz: Champ w/ fist; 2 w/ plasma pistols - 280 each
2xRhinos (DT) w/ combi-meltas - 45 each
10 Berz: Champ w/ fist - 250
2x5 CSM's - 75 each
2xRhinos (DT) w/ havoc launcher - 50 each

2 Oblits - 150
Defiler w/ extra CC arm (no heavy flamer) - 150
Vindicator w/ havoc launcher, daemonic possession - 160

Should be 2,500 total.

The lord runs with the berzerkers on foot, although they will piggy back on a rhino or the LR (with the lord trailing) at the first opportunity.

Abaddon runs with the terms or possibly the oblits (if deep striking). I typically do not deepstrike as I have a very high rate of my models killing themselves, but I still try it occassionally.

The army is not large, but it has decent shooting and it hits really hard when it gets into CC, if it can do so in detail.

Eldar

I was playing with this army a couple of months back and this is my army more or less as played then with a few modifications:

Eldrad - 210
Maugan Ra - 195

7 Harlequins w/ Kisses: 1 upgraded to Shadowseer - 184
7 Harlequins w/ Kisses: 1 upgraded to Shadowseer - 184
8 Fire Dragons: Ex w/ DBF, crack shot - 145
Wave Serpent (DT) w/ twin bright lance - 135

10 Wraithguard + Spirit Seer w/ Destructor - 391
3x10 Dire Avengers: Ex w/ twin catapults - 137 each
Wave Serpent (DT) w/ twin bright lance - 135 (for one DA squad)
5 Rangers - 95

Wraithlord w/ 2 flamers, bright lance, wraithsword - 140
Wraithlord w/ 2 flamers, bright lance, wraithsword - 140
Wraithlord w/ 2 flamers, EML, scatter laser - 135

Should be 2,500 total.

I run Eldrad with the WG and slowly advance in the center. MR either joins them or stays near for counter assault. Depending on the mission and opponent, anyone might take a ride in a serpent.

I think this list has good shooting and good CC capabilities and is overall a very balanced list.

Any comments or criticisms are appreciated, and feel free to check my math.

chaos list will get you some bad losses the way it is now.
just not enough anti tank IMO,
with ONE land raider, ONE vindicator and ONE defiler choosing the right target priority should be no problem for your enemy, if i was to play against this list by the mid of my 2nd round there would be nothing left but rhinos on your side
your eldar list looks way more competetive/ well-thought-out, i would play those.

Well, shooting at a vehicle and actually destroying it are not necessarily the same thing. Honestly though, my Chaos vehicles are there mainly in support roles. If my rhinos survive to turn 3, more than likely, I have found that I win. When the rhinos get knocked out early and my mobility is curtailed, I lose.

Anti-tank is an issue for both of my armies, and I have found it to be an achilles heel whichever list I play. But this has only really been an issue versus LR spam armies and necrons with three monoliths. Every other vehicle but those two types falls to CC without too much difficulty.

My only issue with the Eldar army is that it is just so crunchy, and large portions of it are subject to potential leadership issues.

Personally, I think you should run your Eldar as your Chaos just does not look terribly formidable.

However, that being said I would make some adjustments to your eldar army. First off, I would drop Maugan Ra and replace him with an Avatar. It helps alleviate your leadership problems and meshes better with the Wraithlords. After this I would swap all your Wraithlords to just having two flamers and swords, this gives you some more points to play with and helps to define the role for your Wraithlords, just advance and run until you reach the enemy's line.

I would use the points saved by changing up the Wraithlords to try and max out the Harlequin Squads and to give the harlequins fusion pistols for vehicle busting.

All of this will turn your Eldar into a dedicated assault army but it will be pretty formidable assault army.

I agree with the others - run the Eldar.

And running an Avatar will allow you to point and laugh at Vulkan lists.

ELDAR!!!! Put maugen ra with a unit of harlequins. Also I may suggest finding the point for a troop master in at least one unit if possible as he is more reliable than kisses.

How about Chaos Eldar?

Hhhhmmm...

I'll have to think about the Avatar. I have previously run him and found him to be as much as an impediment as a help. When you lose a combat and your crunchy Eldar are taking 2-3 hits, its just painful with the piss-poor saves they have.

As much as I would like to run CC-only wraithlords, I feel I need some ranged armour punch. Particularly with as many mech style lists that I will see. This is why the WL's with guns and Maugan Ra.

While I would definitely consider adding more harlequins to each squad, I will not add any fusion pistols. Those are a waste of points IMHO.

On DE: I seriously considered running a Dark Eldar army, but simply did not have it "ready enough" to do so.

On a side note, I was talking to a good friend, Jeff O'Neal (he has a couple GT wins), which list he liked more. He said he liked the Chaos more. The rationale was that it was more survivable and it also had the ability to land a knock out blow much more easily than my Eldar.

I have re-tooled my Chaos a little bit and I'll post a second poll with a link from here as well so if people want to re-vote they may do so.

Until the Terminators roll out and smash his face in. Any competitive Vulkan list would crush this army with little trouble. Heavy flamers wreck both Harlequins and Dire Avengers and TH/SS Terminators wreck Wraithlords.

Eldar excel in mobility, not infantry hordes. 3 Wraithlords can be difficult for some armies to deal with, but definitely not Salamanders.
