Which of these two options do you prefer in the following list.

Basic 1850 list
Dakka fly Rant w flesh hooks (ES, Wings, 2 twin Devs, Warp Field, Toxin, Hooks)
3 bare bones sniper fexes (ES,VC, BS)
and
4x 10 gene stealers w Carapace, Scuttle, Feeders
1 Brood Lord, Carapace, Feeders, Hooks, Toxin.
7 stealer retinue w Carapace and Hooks.

Or

Dakka fly Rant w flesh hooks and Miasma (ES, Wings, 2 twin Devs, Warp Field, Toxin, Hooks, Miasma)
3 bare bones sniper fexes (ES,VC, BS)
and
5x 10 gene stealers w Carapace, Scuttle, Feeders

The advatage of the Brood lord is that he brings a unit of flesh hook+feeder stealers to the table and more CC punch, not to mention the ability to lay off the odd wound to a 3+ save as opposed to a 4+ save. Also the ability to infiltrate means I can place him after my opponents setup.

However the disadvantages are, the unit is 2 kill points as opposed to 1, the unit can not score and the unit can not fleet. Also it is a few points more expensive so my Dakka Flyrant loses his Toxic Miasma.

In the above list which would you choose and why?

How can there be no opinion on this?

Less carapace, more genestealers... and actually present a pressing threat that aren't your stealers.

That flyrant should be kitted out to break stuff in CC, leave the fire support (in this case) to Warriors and 'Fexes, as you seem to be lacking in targeted answers to armor.

Things I've gotten other players to admit...

I would go with the Lord as he is still quite the heavy hitter. Tool him all the way.

Because most of the stealer shock players on dakka have moved onto other armies in 5ed. I personally have gone more MC heavy, but not quite full zilla. The shooting is just too beneficial.

Any event, I have had and seen mixed results with the lord and retinue. In 5ed standard missions, I'd lean toward the scoring units. When I've seen him work, it has been in a large squad that can take the casualties and still get a charge off (or be large enough for a multicharge). I tried the smaller 6 man retinue a couple of times and it just didn't have the bodies to be of much use. When he did get stuck in though he was a beast. YMMV.

Iorek: "Snoogums, you're right. Your arguments are irrelevant, and they sure as heck aren't going away."

Well the issue of carapace vs more stealers was hot and heavyin 4th ed. After MUCH play testing I came to the definiat conclusion that carapace was good. This might change in 5th.

Flyrant does break things in CC. Look at what shooting a unit then charging it does as opposed to simply charging it with 2 extra attacks. Unless it's armor the Devs + 4 attack assault works way better in almost every case than a 6 attack assault.

As for pressing threats that are not stealers, unless I want to run a synapse web Stealers are my only choice. As soon as you add gaunts you must add zoans, or wariors and other stuff that would break the theme of the army. (which is stealer shock.)

Well Nids are nerfed in 5th anyway. So I realise they will not make top tourney armies now, still I love my stealer shock and want to make it as good as it can be.
