Jon and Kate Gosselin announce divorce

NEW YORK -- Celebrity parents Jon and Kate Gosselin say they plan to divorce.

The co-stars of "Jon & Kate Plus 8," who are parents of 5-year-old sextuplets and 8-year-old twins, spoke of their decision to separate during Monday's episode of the TLC reality series.

Near the end of the hour-long episode, a title card summed things up in stark terms: It said that on Monday, "legal proceedings were initiated in Pennsylvania to dissolve the 10-year marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin."

The network had been promising a major on-air decision from the couple, whose increasingly troubled marriage has dominated the series in recent weeks, as well as fuelling a firestorm of tabloid coverage.

"We've been dealing a long time with this," Kate said, speaking of her marital problems and the attendant publicity.

"It's been a hard seven or eight months," Jon said in one of his separate on-camera sessions. "It's been a really hard last four months. This is the hardest episode ever."

The beginning of the program was taken up with the delivery and assembly of prefab playhouses for the Gosselin kids. It was the sort of family activity that had formed the crux of the series, now in its fifth season, as it was originally envisioned: A reality show that would chronicle the challenges of raising a supersized family.

But even during this interlude, Kate and Jon were barely speaking. Where to install the four playhouses was a source of friction between them.

"My stomach is churning because I know this is gonna cause a huge fight," Kate told the camera as the installation process began in their yard.

The latter part of the show focused on the couple as they discussed the painful decision they have settled on.

"I just need relief now," Kate said. "I need to turn the page."

Jon described his relationship with Kate as "a total breakdown of everything."

"Jon & Kate" is TLC's most-watched series, drawing nearly 10 million viewers for its season premiere recently. But with the couple's celebrity has come nonstop celebrity coverage, and scandal. There have been reports of infidelity by both Jon and Kate (accusations both of them deny).

Adding to the strain, Pennsylvania's Labour Department opened an investigation into whether the show's production is complying with state child labour laws. TLC has said it "fully complies" with state laws and regulations.

Looking ahead, Kate said, "I don't really want to be alone. I don't want to do this alone."

But she described the split as "the next chapter." And while she and Jon have spoken angrily about the pressure on their marriage from unsought fame and press attention, she conceded, "I believe that it's a chapter that probably would have played out had the world been watching, or not."

One thing the couple could agree on: "Jon & Kate Plus 8" will continue.

"We interview separately, we'll film different things," Jon explained. "Me and the kids, her and the kids."

"How does the show go on?" said Kate. "The show MUST go on!"

just goes to show that as soon as you become a celebrity you sign away all your riight to privacy.

Yeah it's a bad deal. Having so many kids in one household is going to be difficult for two people, let alone one. I think the pressure of a televised life helped to bring about the end, but it still comes down to the decisions of both parents. I watched part of the special last night and they both looked pissed, embarrassed, and exhausted. I feel bad for the kids, but the parents brought it on themselves.

And they somehow thought, with an already troubled marriage.. having MORE children, AND televising their homelife would be a GOOD idea? As if 8 children is a good idea at all in this day and age.
I hope they don't have any more childre, the genepool can do without any more of their idiot DNA running arund than is already out there.

And I think the show is quite educational. I've never even watched it and I've already learned two good lessons from it.
1. Don't undergo fertility treatment.
2. Don't be Jon.

Thank efffin god. So sick of hearing about these asspickles. "Reality" tv is just slowed. People that follow it are sheep. Mindless automatons that tune in, gab about it, read People magazine and eat themselves into a diabetic coma.

Stupid.

Glad they split. Hope the show gets dropped. Like that moosh-faced, half-mongoloid Jon douche did as a kid.

But... I learned something from the few minutes my girlfriend tortured me with that show... a few things actually.

1. Use birth control.
2. Abortion isnt a bad thing
3. That many kids at once... run. Gnaw your arm off like a coyote if you have to.
4. No one... and I mean no one needs that many kids... period.

See... learning... all that in about 10 minutes. Not that I didnt really already know that but it was driven home in the most painful of ways.

I just saw something that made me sick, aparently 10.8 Million people watched that show while only 2.3 million watched the coverage of the Near Revolution in Iran over the weekend ( combined ratings of CNN, FOX and MSNBC)

America is doomed, or at least deserves to be. If the rest of the world is lucky we will get wacked with a nice big comet some time soon.

its been going on for a few years now, and judging from the house they live in, tlc pays well to stalk childrens lives with cameras

If a couple only wants three children, and already have a set of twins.. They need to make sure they are not implanting more than 1-2 eggs, not 3.. or 5 because "some may not take". If a couple is unwilling to take the risk of needing to do "selective reduction" after they find out the 3 eggs implanted have now split into 6 viable lifeforms, they need not to implant that many.
And going through more fertility treatments, when you already have a set of twins and your marriage is on the rocks is one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard of.
If they have a set of 8 yr olds.. and their marriage has been gak for 10 years,.. sort of reasons maybe Don't have any more children!

I agree with you 100%. No one needs that many children. But with families like, the Duggars with their 16 or whoever many they have now can take care of them; supply for all their children's needs without outside assistance,... they have every right to have more.

oh,... and the television thing was just pure genious. "Our marriage is totally screwed, and we have more children than we can handle... so lets put it all on t.v.!"
