Hi folks
I am planning to paint/dip a large quantity of troops in a few days and I know you use diluted wood-stain, but is there any other colour option, for example black, red, green, etc. If so, what do you look for ingredient-wise? I ask because my army is a Deathwing/Ravenwing force and while the wood stain would work good with the Deathwing, it wouldn't work with the Ravenwing IMO.
Any thoughts or tips?
Cheers!

Ive dipped a few things, and its never been diluted. Infact the only thing I can think of to dilute that with, would be some kind of thinner and that could ruin your mini. Water wouldnt work because its oil based. Also I can tell you it doesnt work so well on SM. Id personally suggest making a bunch of wash (yes make it, not buy it) and do it that way.

I used a fast-drying, water-based stain from my local hardware store. It was 'medium oak'. I used it over rotting flesh & the result was -

Its pretty simple really. USe can use any color but for sake of explaining ill say black. Get a small cup, put some dish soap in it, then put some water in it. Stire it up so its nice and soapy looking. Then in a bottle cap (or paint pallet) put some black paint in said cap. Slowly mix in the soapy water until it looks like a wash. Presto! Best part is you can make any color a wash with the method. It works really well to, Ive used it a few times Automatically Appended Next Post: Medium Oak is what I used on my house army SM. It must be a SM thing because they didnt look AWESOME like most things do after dipping. It does however, look great on your plague marines

I play deathwing and got a Minwax water based wood stain (DARK!) and it looks GREAT in contrast to the bone. If you go real dark then you gotta life-like really nice contrast to the model. Check out: www.thearmypainter.com When you dip your first model, make sure it is not one you really care about, if you do it wrong and let to much get on the model, it looks very bad. If you actually sling the model and get most of the liquid off of the model (using a paper town or brush to help also works) then it can look great!

Coolness I'll try both the wash method and the stain method. I have just picked up some stain (antique pine, might be too light?? :( ) and will post pics of the results
Cheers!

I've tried Minwax before on my Mageknight figures and they looked great. I have yet to try them on my 40K figures. (too scared to screw them up)

I have a good bit of "dipping" experience and let me tell you that it depends hugely on the colorscheme of your army. Firstly, the act of dipping itself should be a last resort. It almost always puts too much on the model without tons of "slinging" the model, which leads to dropping, breakage, a giant mess AND it wastes tons of the dipping material. Get some low odor mineral spirits, a good sized brush and take the time to brush it onto your models.
Second, I do have to tip the hat to the Army Painter dips. I've used minwax, polyshades, and about every other type of dip suggestion out there, and while expensive, (30$ for a tiny can) it puts the most protective coating I've ever seen on your models. It also doesn't appear to yellow with age as nearly every minwax product does. Most people don't notice because they shoot for a brown/yellow color to begin with, but depending on your base colors, it takes around 9 months for the yellowing to start. The polyshades, while it doesn't yellow as much with time becomes very dried out and brittle and it will chip, I promise you. A re-dip in army painter fixes it right up though.
I've also had great success with the Minwax spray cans of stain. Limited color choices and it seriously can take up to 2 weeks to dry on your plastic models, but if you have time to wait, like the color and don't want to mess around with the hassle of using a conventional dipping method, this works great. I paint sets for boardgames like memoir 44, Battlelore, and Descent for sale on ebay and this is my staple. It doesn't provide nearly the protection army painter does, but I can do an entire army in 10 minutes, of almost any size, vehicles, troops, elites, you name it. I can't say if it yellows with age or not, but I've no complaints from any sets I've been selling over the past 3 years.
