Subject: Jump Infantry Walking and Difficult Terrain

The Jump Infantry entry in unit types within the BRB gives permission for units of jump infantry to opt not to jump, and instead walk:
Page 52 wrote:"[Using Jump packs] is optional and they can choose to move as normal infantry if they wish."
It then goes on to explain how difficult terrain effects jump infantry:
"However, if a moving jump infantry model begins or ends its move in difficult terrain, it must take a dangerous terrain test."
I think it's clearly not intended for Jump Infantry that opt to walk like normal infantry to take dangerous terrain tests due to where they start or end thier movement, but I had someone present this RAW situation to me recently and I am struggling to find a reason in the wording that doesn't rely on a loose interpretation of these phrases based on those surrounding them.
I would appreciate some input with regards to what people see the RAW of this to be, and more specifically, I'm looking for WHY people would disagree with this interpretation.

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

I would counter argue that the Wording is clearly referring to the way "Jump Infantry" actually moves. If they move like Normal Infantry, the Cease to Follow ANY of the Rules for Jump Infantry. Yes their Type stays Jump Infantry, but the rule is very clearly saying "move as normal infantry", which does not include Dangerous terrain tests. However, it is a Very nice example of why: 1) GW need to desperately find a Nerd Lawyer who will proofread their Rules 2) Give us a Damn beta Period so that the Masses of Unwashed nerds can pick these things up. 3) Failing that, Pay me in Red Bull so I can spend 2 Weeks Fixing every single Legacy Codex and the Rulebook to be useable

I can see the argument, but disagree with it.
If they're moving as normal infantry, then they're not moving as jump infantry. And so the rule covering jump infantry moving through difficult terrain doesn't apply.

agreed with Gwar! and insaniak - I think its pretty clear - "IF using jump-packs..." dangerous tests will be made.
Walking is not using jump-packs.

I agree this is how it should be played, but it isnt what the RAW actually says.
"However, if a moving jump infantry model begins or ends its move in difficult terrain, it must take a dangerous terrain test."
This mentions nothing about moving as infantry, nor moving as jump infantry. All it mentions is when a model that IS jump infantry moves.
If a model that IS jump infantry choses to move as normal infantry it does not stop being jump infantry at any point. Therefore, since it has moved and has ended its move in difficult terrain then it is required to make a difficult terrain test.
This is not because it is moving as normal infantry, but instead because of the rule quoted above.

The OPTION of removing the jumppacks has its own rules. They are no longer jump infantry without jump packs. The RAW dictates that these assault units that have removed their jump packs may choose to move as normal infantry. From that point on rules regarding movement and jump infantry no longer apply. Only the rules for movement as normal infantry apply.

Hmmm.... give up 6-11" of movement to avoid crashing? I'm surprisingly OK with my opponent doing that.

I don't think this is removing them, just not using them for a turn or two.

If moving as normal Infantry could change the Unit type of Jump Infantry, then yeah sure.
But it doesnt.
The rules clearly state that if a moving (movement, doesnt state which type of movement, as it doesnt need to. A Jump Infantry model could Run into terrain, for the same effect ) Jump Infantry model begins or ends its move in difficult terrain, it must make a dangerous terrain test.
Yes, the Jump infantry are not slowed down by difficult terrain - if they run, like most of unit types - but they still count as moving.

oh yes, Homer, you are correct but I believe you may choose not to equip them and reduce the point cost or get a free rhino (or something, I don't have my codex in front of me and don't run assault troops but feel confident they may be equipped minus the jump packs)

Sure. But when they choose to walk, they're moving as infantry. So for the purposes of that specific movement, they are infantry, not jump infantry. Movement rules that apply to jump infantry therefore do not apply at that point in time.

This is just like Fourth Edition, where if you were 'armed with a rapid fire weapon' you couldn't shoot ANY weapon and charge by RAW.
Technically, it's a grey RAW area. If even the fountain of RAW, Gwar, says they don't need a Dangerous Terrain test, I'd say you're good.
If they move as infantry, they don't need a Dangerous Terrain test. I can't see a Tourney Judge ruling against that position.
