Ok so I came up with a rediculous idea the other day:

what if I joined a broodlord to a 24 man gaunt squad to act as his retinue!??!? even better I would give it WoN!?!?!

Well, I playtested it last night and it worked BEAUTIFULLY! the squad was so dangerous looking to my friend(he had taken solice in the fact that normally a BL with retinue is rather easy to deal with as stealers arent hard to shoot to pieces, especially by eldar) that he tried through an avatar at it as well as many eldar missle shots. in the end, the broodlord survived 3 combats, one which the avatar died by rerolling gaunt hits, thanks to giving the nearby stealers tendrils, and the broodlord stomped a full harley squad with farseer with the help of his retinue... Having that 24 wound bullet shield is just grosse.

By the end, the entire retinue died, respawned on the board and the broodlord live to the end of the game...

Gaunts don't count as a retinue to a Broodlord. The Broodlord has to join the unit. Therefore, if the Broodlord is capable of hitting the enemy in close combat, they are capable of hitting him back as well (targeting IC's in close combat is possible). So if the Broodlord and his Gaunts would encounter a capable assault unit (like Harlequins), the Broodlord would die very fast.

Not exactly, they wouldhave to charge him which is very possible, but they would also THEN(furious charge) strike simultaniously and the harlies would get no saves, and the broodlord has implant attack, which means he alone would kill around half to 3/4 of the squad, not to mention all of the 24 to 48 gaunt hits, unless softened up first. Oh and I mentioned that he would join them, read first before commenting...

But that's not quite the idea. The idea is to have them going around and picking out all the shooty but weak units because of survivability. If you do encounter a good assault unit then because he's an IC just make sure he's either out of reach since it works both ways, or fight and hope that somehow he doesn't die. I only just started a nid army btw

No offense but you are vastly overestimating harlies and underestimatin the broodlord, broodlord is I7 WS7 which means the only way harlies survive is they charge, which is likely, in which case they only MATCH his initiative, which makes them obviously strike simultaniously and the broodlord is hitting on 3s with S6 on T3, with a power weapon that does 2 wounds per unsaved wound.... that means with 4 attacks (base #) he hits with 4 or more likely 3, wounds with all 3, he alone has now killed nearly all if not all of the harlies.

Even worse, he and his bullet shield charge them, they dont strike sultaniously and with 5 attacks, he would deal on average 4 instakill wounds, which means 8!! wounds, the entire squad would be dead before they could strike back...

errr, i think you have a few mistakes.

Implant attack only does 2 wounds to each individual model, not to the unit, so if you attack 5 times, hit 5 guys, and wound 5 guys, if they are 1 wound models you have still only done 5 wounds.

Also, the Broodlord MUST be taken with 5-11 Genestealers, while he is with his Genestealers he is not an IC and cannot join gaunts.

Well, the BL already doesn't gain Fleet, since he isn't an upgrade character. The other Gaunts might as well forfeit Fleet as well if you want this to be remotely worthwhile.

So your regular Gaunts are footslogging into assault, and so is your BL, which defeats the purpose of Gaunts(Blitzkrieg and the like)

HOWEVER! First turn you're able to Fleet your regular Gaunts and Scout your BL and his retinue. But this can only happen once..

Ugg, missed that,thought it was optional, well, scratch that idea...

Yup.. my bestfriend is a 'nid player, so he was heartbroken when he found that information out. But the scout move could be the equivalent to a guaranteed 6" Fleet. just hope you get Dawn of War for deployment, or there's plenty of cover and the enemy's units aren't more than 12" apart (10" to be safe haha)

Edit: DoW's on a roll of a 5 or 6, if I recall.. and as a 'stealer player, you should be good at rolling those numbers. haha

Gameandwatch are you suggesting that the broodlord take gaunts as a retinue? If so this is impossible since he can only take stealers (as was mentioned above). You were working out implant attack wrong until Demogerg pointed out a flaw in your reasoning. I would suggest reading (and learning) from a few more seasoned tyranid players before embarking on a path of embarressment.

I mean no disrespect, but you clearly have a lot to learn.

As said, the Broodlord has to take the 'stealer retinue. So the only way a BL can join a gaunt squad is when his retinue is destroyed, and the BL is the sole survivor.

IIRC the Broodlord does not have the Independant Character special rule, which would mean he cannot join the gaunt brood even under those circumstances.

I'm afraid you don't recall correctly, as he really is an Independant Character. In the rare cases it matters anyway.
