Oslo Norway

I went to the Arcon 40k tournament, the largest 40k tournament in Norway. Havn't played in a tournament for two years, and that was a blast, so I was looking forward to a really good time.
I had great plans to take orderly pictures of every turn etc, but that flew out the window fast, so instead we have a more random collection of pics, will hopefully be able to convey the message anyways.

Missions:

All missions were objective missions, with a secondary objective that required you to kill a spesific unit. Each player rolled randomly for which objectives he had to control, so you could end up having to hold your opponents objectives etc. You gained the most points for having both of your objectives, and making sure that the enemy didn't control any of his.

Game 1: Orks
Dawn of war

So, I drew against orks in the first round, a bit nervous until I saw the list, still didn't take my victory for granted, especially as I rolled up dawn of war, limiting the damage I could inflict before he closed in on me:

Warboss
9ish Nobs, lots of stuff (no painboy – my opponent commented on this, he had lost his painboy model or something - that is bad luck )
- trukk
20 sluggas
20 shootas
2x 10 snotlings
15 burnas
Battlewagon
2x deff kopta
3x zapp gun

Pre-game:
I had to control the two objectives in the middle of the field, not too bad, while my opponent also get's the one in the water and then he has to hold the one on the hill in my DZ, no objective camping for those gretchin. I won the roll for deployment and gave it to him, since it was DoW.

Turn 1
He moves in, nothing is in range or in LOS to shoot. He does a major error, boxing in his battlewagon with boyz in the upper right corner. (Steep hills were impassable for tanks)

In my turn, my army rolls in, I get lucky on a night-fight roll with my LR, and I destroy the nobs' trukk. Fatally for my opponent, his nobs get's pinned. The trukk also blows up 6'', killing 7 gretchin from a nearby unit, they then flee off the board. That is one hell of a battle-cannon shot. My other LR also get's lucky on the night-fight roll, and then proceeds to take out 17 orks. That was one amazing turn concidering the night fighting.

Turn 2
He moves closer, shielding the nobs with gretchin, also tries some shots, but only a single guardsman dies. I destroy the zapp-guns, and I probably knocked out a couple of nobs.

Turn 3
He charges the squad in the woods, killing them, but his remaining ork squad is now standing near a couple of flamers. Everything else moves forward.

My vendetta zooms onto the table in the upper left corner, dumps off the melta-vets, which proceeds to kill the battlewagon. The charging shoota boyz die from flamers and other stuff, leaving a single guy with a rokkit. I kill off the zapp-gun crew and some nobs, and then the PBS makes the nobs run away. I also kill the last three slugga boyz.

Turn 4

His burnas flame my vets and the vendetta, all vets die in the flames, then they charge the vendetta, but only rip off a lascannon. The gretchin dive into the water on the objective

I kill some burnas, all nobs and all gretchin. I have both objectives.

Turn 5
His last shoota, fleeing, kills the vendetta, moral victory for my opponent

I kill all but two burnas, and the rokkit-boy also gets away.

Result: 20-1

My opponent was a great guy, keeping his spirits and humor up the entire game, making my first game at the tournament a really good experience. Thanks for the game dude

So, I'm up in the top, and is placed at table 3 against a black templar player that massacred a thousands sons player in the first round.

Game 2: Black Templars
Pitched battle

His list:

Marshal Helbrecht
Emperors champion
15 crusaders, melta, fist
15 crusaders, melta, fist
2x LR crusader
vindicator

I litteraly gaped when I saw his figures. He picked up his three tanks and placed them on the table. ''Is that all?'' I asked several times I took first turn, eager to try out the vendetta scout-kill move. Fortunately, he deployed in a way that made it possible.

I scouted my vendetta up to his two land raiders. He failed to seize.

Turn 1
My vendetta gleefully deliver the veterans, they only hit once, but immobilize one crusader. Not as good as I had hoped, but good enough, and my vendetta makes up for them by immobilizing the other with its one lascannon – GAME OVER!

The templars pile out, and the vets die. The vendetta loses a gun, but is free to escape next turn – hey, a bonus My other vets loose their chimera to the vindicator.

Turn 2
My plasma russ opens up on one squad, and it is wiped out, only EC with 1 wound left. My CCS takes out vindi. His marshal squad hides in LR, not sure what he was planning to do with them

Turn 3
EC eats some plasma and lascannons, and dies. He moves his other squad out again

Turn 4
In a repeat of turn 2, his squad dies, except Helbrecht. My CCS chimera dies from a land raider MM, and are then eventually wittled down to only commander

Turn 5
Helbrecht gets to slaughter an infantry squad before he dies

Result: 18-2

After two games, I'm in the lead, as the other top players got draws or minor victories. I look around, and guess that I'm up against a 3x hammerhead tau player

Battle 3 – Tau

Dawn of war, I give my opponent first turn.

Commander, AFP, MP, TA
2x suit, tl-MP, TA, 2x shield drones
2x suit, tl-MP, TA, 2x shield drones
3x hammerhead
2x 12 FW
- 2x devilfish
2x 10 kroot

This list has what it takes to take me out, and the battlefield is not kind at all. A huge building cutting the field in two. In addition, I roll up the worst objectives, having to take the two that are far awat, and I have to split my army in two to be able to win. I choose to go all mech and armour on one end, as the objective is far away there, and place all my infantry on the other end. Mistake! The huge building in the middle makes sure that my forces can't support eachother.

Turn 1
He kills nothing I think. I get lucky on a spot-roll and kill two suits, and here, my luck has run out

Turn 2
One unit of kroot enter, hammerhead kills CCS chimera, 2 survive the explosion (all but one vehicle that was damaged in this battle actually exploded), some guardsmen die, the guardsmen in the corner get wittled down slowly, they won't really play much of a role this battle, getting slowly wiped down to two men by kroot and that damn airburst projector :/ I make some daring moves for the left objective late game, but my four charging guardsmen are little match for a devilfish.

I immobilize and 2xWD a hammerhead, leaving it a useless hull.

Turn 3

He knocks weapon off medusa (crap – but then again, he didn't fail a single coversave for his tanks this battle, I think he made something like 12-15 coversaves on his tanks this battle :/) My vendetta enters, but because of coversaves, it of course fails to do anything.

Turn 4-6

This battle now just turns into a war of attrition, that he is winning because of his insane scatter-dice and coversaves, and my own inability to get a hit with a scatter-dice (only started getting hits when I used his )

He kills my vendetta, we play slugging-match for a tie (or I play for a tie, he plays for a win), as my infantry have no chance of taking his left objective. My vets and CCS battle it out with firewarriors and drones, eventually taking out a hammerhead, devilfish, 12 firewarriors and 2 drones. I have 3 vets on the objective, actually securing a draw on turn 6. We roll for turn 7... and it's a 4 :(

Turn 7
He finishes the three vets off, barely.

Result: 1-14

A devastating loss. If I hadn't had such horrible luck, and he hadn't had such insane luck on scatters and coversaves, this would have been another battle, the turn 7 roll make sure that even the draw was snatched from my grasp. Even with all the horrible luck, it was a highly enjoyable battle, it was insanely intense down to the last moment, where I had four 3+ coversaves to pass on 1 veteran, I failed two :/

Oslo Norway

The other top players didn't get convincing wins, so I was still in the running. The tau player was now in the lead, with 2x eldar players just below him, and me just bellow them. The tau player ended up in 2nd place overall.

I am now down to table 2, and get to fight the other extreme anti-armour force in the tournament. (and 3 year in a row Arcon-champion)

Battle 4 - Eldar
Pitched battle, I give him first turn

Farseer, fortune
Autarch, fusion, power weapon
2x6 fire dragons
1x5 fire dragons, exarch, flamer
2x9 Dire avengers
- 2x waveserpent
3x falcon

17 firedragons! In falcons, which means I will struggle ALOT to stop them. Luckily, I roll good for objectives, and we end up having to take the ones we have places ourselves, which means his avengers won't come for my objectives. My infantry can handle the dragons, and I have spread them out in such a way that he can't get into melta-range with his dragons, barely even within full range.

Turn 1
I try for the first time to seize the initiative, thinking I can destroy some skimmers before they get fortuned, and I actually roll a 6! I then destroy a waveserpent and do some minor damage to other stuff. In his turn, he knocks out the CCS chimera and stuns PBS chimera.

Turn 2
I make a bold move, vets go after a falcon, they fail :( But my medusa finally manage to take a tank down (the first tank it has managed to destroy), knocking it out anyways. I also knock out another serpent, now his avengers are definitively not coming to me.

He retaliates fast and HARD. He kills all chims, vets and russ on left side, leaving only my PBS and CCS on that flank, my assault on his objectives have failed. His autarch charges the CCS, they duke it out until turn 6, my commander with one wound remaining making something like 10 5+ saves!

Turn 3

I immobilize another falcon, leaving just one skimmer to assault my objectives. He consolidates around his objectives and the lone falcon with a lone farseer moves towards me, fortuned of course.

He consolidates around his objectives, making a deathzone for everything

Turn 4-6
The battle now turns into his falcon vs everything. And to all you who doubt the falcon in 5th ed, read this!

The damned thing survives 2x round of shooting from everything I have. It contests one of my objectives. In round 6, he unloads his farseer from it, trying to charge me to contest both objectives, but his farseer dies.

As a sidenote, the PBS kills the firedragons that I needed to kill for the bonus points, jeej, now they just had to stay alive, with the autach being the only thing that could get to them, they did, all because of my heroic company commander

After the two turns of fire, I continue pouring fire into the thing, and even assault it with frags. I only stun it all the time!!!

I make a daring drop from the vendetta, slinging my airborne vets off after moving 24", they scatter, one dies, only one in melta-range, get's two pens still, but still fails.

Turn 7
My vendetta moves to contests one of his objectives.

The vets get three meltas in melta-range of the backside of the falcon, but I of course fail the bring it down order now, and only one melta hits. It manages to immobilize the thing at least!

I charge everything into the falcon, grenades for the win! My infantry rip off another two weapons, leaving it without any, and immobilized (it lost another weapon earlier)

He fires all his firedragons on the vendetta, but they just rip off a lascannon! But of course, then he charges. A bunch of dragons plant meltabombs at my vendetta, and barely kill it, damn :/.

My 25 guardsmen with grenades now have the chance to take the falcon down in his assault fase. I only have to get an immobilized or WD result to kill that damn falcon, but it is not to be, and I loose :(

Result: 13-8

Again, an intense and highly enjoyable battle, after the last two, I was totally spent. If only lady luck had favored me instead of my opponents in these last two battles...

On table 1, the action was brutal, as can be seen from this picture (there is an objective somewhere in this chain-collision )

Although I finished 4th in battlepoints, after paintscores, I ended up with a final overall standing: 3rd

The Eldar player I played in the last battle takes 1st overall, with the Tau player taking 2nd.

I had a great time at the tournament. Thanks to the organizer and all my opponents, who made this a great experience.

Army review:

Foot CCS: The powerweapon is really really useless, even if it only got included because I had 10 points left, (and didn't have any more flamers or melta models) it should be anything else. Otherwise, did their job giving orders to infantry squads and some light counter-charge. Decent
Mounted CCS: Often lost their chimera, but overall did very well. A cheap vet-squad that can give orders. Good

PBS: These guys have a lot of potential, and I almost feel obligated to bring them. At the same time, they din't really do much, they sent some units fleeing for a turn, and they killed a bit with soulstorm. I feel that the points could be better spent elsewhere though, I can get a mech-vet squad for these guys, or another russ/vendetta etc. Underperformed

Platoon command: Didn't do too much. I think they gave something like two orders over all the battles. Decent
Infantry squads: Also didn't really do too much, no rhinos to bust open, couldn't get past fortuned coversaves (or infalible tau coversaves ) Held objectives in my zone. Didn't die except against that damn airburst fragmentor. Decent+
Chimera-vets: Destroyed some tanks, were a big threat, gives me possibility to take objectives far away. Good
Airborne vets: Won a game for me, almost drew two more for me, did very well: Awesome

Vendetta: Carried the airborne vets around, big threat to tanks, immobilized a land raider Awesome

LR with plasma: The first two battles, it took out insane amounts of infantry, other two, it harrased tanks, the plasma was awesome: Awesome
Naked russ: Did decent every battle, and it is cheap. You get what you pay for here. Good
Medusa: It hasn't destroyed a tank in all the battles I have used it in the warm-up for the tournament, it finally did in the tournament. It is a huge treat to all tanks, despite it's own inability to actually kill any tanks. (It kills infantry decently though) Not totally convinced by it, but it gives me the possibiliy to reach out and destroy backfield tanks, and my enemies always see it as a HUGE threat. Decent

Wow, great battle report! Just goes to show how different the metagame is over there.

I really appreciate that you took the time to take all those pictures. They really helped me get a sense of how the games were going. Bad luck on those dice rolls, but you've got to get em out of your system sometime. Great showing for the Guard.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

congratulations! Mech eldar are a real nightmare for the IG! Best is to assault it since holo fields do not affect HH combat results..

In the tau game, you rolled a 4 at the end of turn 6? that should have ended the game! (turn 5 roll a 1-2, game ends, turn 6 roll a 1-4 game ends)..

and for those who doubt the tau, doubt them at your peril....

what happened to the PBS? seems they were quiet in the games?

Actually they do. "Whenever your opponent rolls on the damage table for that vehicle, they must roll two dice and apply the lowest result."

Great reports Illumini, very nice pictures. Its just a shame that most armies weren't painted A great read.

Say what???? You are totally sure about that? Then that damned falcon would have been very very dead, that sucks if it is accurate. I don't think it would have changed my final standing though, maybe I could have finished second, but not too sure about that, but very nice to know for next time.

In the tau game, you rolled a 4 at the end of turn 6? that should have ended the game! (turn 5 roll a 1-2, game ends, turn 6 roll a 1-4 game ends)..

It goes to turn 6 on a 3+, and turn 7 on a 4+ (it says game continues on a 4+)

what happened to the PBS? seems they were quiet in the games?

Yeah, they didn't really contribute in any significant way. They did send some units packing, but never off the board, and they did kill a bit, but I am really debating if I really need them. No one here runs nob bikers anyways, and mech is prevalient in the top tables, they will probably be dropped in my next list.

Ok, good to hear that it was done right

Thanks. There were some extremely pretty armies there, and I had also planned to take pics of the best looking, but that didn't materialize unfortunatly :/

Thanks for the great read! Good to see someone took the time to upload a lot of photos and run an army that isn't cookie-cutter in a tourney.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
