Hello! I'm brand new to Dakka Dakka (joined yesterday) and this is my first post.
So, as a IG player I wonder which squad is the best?
And why is ___ better than ___?

P.S: If you want to know, I haven't actually PLAYED WH40k that much.. only painted etc.
So if there are any strange rules for ___, please tell me what they mean and/or do.
(Yes I do have the 5th ed codex, but I'm not so good at WH40K rules.)

The storm troopers still have a role to fill but for most purposes the veterans are the better choice. They count as a troop choice, can take an extra special weapon and can take shotguns. I know shotguns might not sound that great compared to hot shot lasguns but if you need to charge this is the way to go in my opinion. The main advantage for the storm trooper is that they can still function as a drop team.

Ok, thanks a lot!
So I suppose you recommend me to use the veterans, then.
What should their role be? Shoot stuff, or melee etc?
(Sorry if it might seem as a nooby question, but I want to be sure on how to use my troops, you know.)

Responds from other people are also much appreciated!

Take Veterans with Carapace if you want to have Stormtroops it makes no real difference other than the hotshot lasguns that they recieve , but they are sixteen points a model so you can have

10 Veterans w/ 3 meltaguns with Carapace for 160

or

10 Stormtroopers with nothing cepting what they come with.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

Actually, you can have 10 veterans with 3 meltas and carapace for 130. That only gets you 7 stormtroopers with a single meltagun. Vets are the far superior choice. Troopers are okay for suicide teams in the enemy rear, and two melta stormtroopers at 105 is a decent deal, but if you have some valkeries you can do the same with your vets, deepstrike the bird and deploy. It's more points, but you get the added firepower of the valk and scare the pants off your opponent with a giant model in his deployment zone.

Yeah, there really isn't much point to Stormtroopers unless you are using their Airborne Assault option for vehicle-free insertions, typically to shoot into the rear or side armor of a high-value vehicle target. Two Melta Guns in a 5-man suicide squad is my preferred tactic.

As for Veterans, I think they are better off with Camo Cloaks to increase their effectiveness when they use the nigh-ubiquitous cover saves of 5th Edition. Anything that denies Cover Saves is typically AP4 too, so the upgraded armor isn't going to help you much of anywhere but in Assault or dealing with overheating from a Plasma Gun.

I really wanted to love stormtroopers. I really did. I dumped my grenade launcher/flamer that came in the box, got the spec weapons pack but alas, it really is hopeless. Veterans are just too good of a deal and strength 3 hellguns is just too bad. I'm not a competitive game but when I'm looking down my list and see this giant 200 point lightbulb flashing at me, I have just had to give in and go for the veteran squads.
