I did a search for this and found the topic to, i believe, predate the 5th edition rules so if my timetable is off sorry for reposting.

Based on the old thread they said that a broodlord cannot fleet with his retinue because he does not have it, however i found this in the new rule book that makes me wonder if it's a new rule, mebbe for old codices since they are phasing out retinues overall.

Retinues: Some Codex books allow you to field characters together with a special unit that they cannot leave during the game( which is normally called a 'retinue', 'bodyguard' or similar). Where this is the case, the character counts as an upgrade character until all of the other members of this unit are killed, at which point it starts counting as an independent character and it will do so for the rest of the game.

and this

  • Upgrade characters are fielded as part of units from the start of the game, representing a squad leader or unit champion, such as a Space Marine Veteran Champion. They do not have an entry of their own and are effectively just another trooper in their unit, with enhanced characteristics and perhaps a wider selection of weapons and wargear choices.

  • ok so with the retinue the broodlord is a "genestealer" with better stats, wouldn't that give him fleet, as all genestealers have, until his retinue dies?

No, he is a BROODLORD counting as an upgrade character. He stgill does not have fleet as the mdoel does not have fleet.

Sergeant /= trooper, broodlord /= genestealer. They have different wargear and different stats, one of which is the inability to fleet.

The rule is there to finally standardise retinues, so it is clear as to what they are, albeit a little late as theyre [hasing them out....

    What he said.

Broodlord doesn't have fleet, that means the entire unit cannot Assault after Running.

What you can do - And its been done to my face (front lines) a few times; Detatch the genestealer retinue from the broodlord in the movement phase - Whom have infiltrated - and assault with the genestealers, bring the broodlord in in later turns.

Is that even possible? Since the Broodlord is counted as an upgrade character (for retinues) I figured he couldn't detach.

The Broodlord has a Retinue, it's even called Retinue in his entry on pg 36 of the Tyranid Codex. ICs cannot leave their Retinues. Says so in the IC rules on pg 48 of the BRB. You have been hit by a move the rules do not allow (and didn't allow in 4th edition either).

And note that it's the IC who must leave a unit if they're to separate. Even if the Broodlord loses his retinue and later joins another Stealer brood the unit cannot leave him behind when moving. It's the character who has to leave the unit, unless it's a retinue - then he can't leave it.

I wouldn't take a broodlord in my opinion, it uses an HQ choice and hes slow. If you do use him i wouldn't add the retinue.

Im starting a nid army soon, ordered in the first couple of boxes last week, and from what I've read in the codex the army as a whole is currently pretty poor.

when i started playing nids were nigh unbeatable. I didnt see a nid player lose a game for the first 5 years i was in the hobby.

Hopefully they can find a better balance between the current gimped and convoluted dex, and the completely OP 'dex of old.

Well, to be fair, the only reason they are gimped now is the 5th ed change to scoring units. Before, you could easily take a Flyrant, 6 Carnifexes and 2 Squads of 8 Stealers and expect to win. Now you can't do that any more.

That was still a major flaw in the codex though.

Tyranids were never supposed to be an army of monstrous creatures. They didn't make the line infantry good enough.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

I don't see it as a flaw. It is documented often that when resistance is strong, they will send waves of carnifexes and tyrants, while using the smaller beasts to harvest Biomass and take out weak areas.

That doesn't translate to "they use carnifexes all the time because hormogaunts are overpriced".

It's not that monstrous creatures are usable, it's that the infantry is unusable. The capacity to have an army of monstrous creatures isn't necessarily a bad thing, that being the only viable build definitely was.
