Subject: So I read Watchmen for the first time...

Chilling with GBF the other day and he was racking up some comics before we got a game in. I was just poking around and have always meant to read the Watchmen so I picked it up. I really liked it. I've never been into comics, mainly because I don't like to buy something that I can read in 15 minutes and doesn't look right on a shelf. I also don't get into the Superhero stuff. I like heros that are more human. It's one reason I like Imperial Guard novels like Last Chancers, and I liked most everyone in the Watchmen.
So can anyone recommend something like it? I plan on picking up Sandman since it seems like a staple, and I actually already have "Death" by Gaiman. I really just don't know anything about graphic novels so I'm curious what is best.
Also, I loved the pirate comic that ran parallel with the story. I would love to find something like that and would even buy it in traditional comic book form. Does anything like that exist? I like how the artwork and the story was pretty dark, but not because it was especially gory, but because of the guy's situation and the way it was drawn.
But feel free to suggest traditional comics if you think I would like them based on my tastes, I just personally prefer the graphic novel.

I've always thought that Spiderman was one of the most human fictional characters ever.

It's not a superhero comic, but if you like messed up characters and situations I cannot reccomend Preacher enough.

Yeah I do like Spiderman and Batman for their down to earth abilities. Never read the comics but I always watch and buy the movies.
I eyeballed Preacher every time I passed it in the store. It definitely looked good. Ill have to get it.

Mad Dok Grotsnik did a thread about graphic novels recently. You should search for that.

I'll hesitantly recommend the Punisher...although I think that the first film actually made Frank Castle a bit more human than many of the comics have...

I've always thought it over-rated. It is not the best comic ever it is not even the best Alan Moore comic IMO both V for Vendetta and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are better.

I saw those nearby as well and almost bought V. I havent seen the movie either. Will reading it explain that stupid meme?
I will definitely look into both of those, thanks.
By the way, I had a good laugh when the duo busts out the "speeder bikes." I was thinking Star Wars. Here they come out on Segways.

I liked the graphic novel V a lot better than the movie, but the movie was still good.

I bought and read V. Not bad at all, but I didn't think it was nearly as deep as Watchmen. The suspense was probably the best thing going for it. I thought some parts of the story were lacking. I will probably watch the movie now though.
I also bought this new hardcover Dark Tower graphic novel on a whim. It precedes the novels. Thing is Ive never read a single one, but that might be a good thing. It isn't bad. The dialogue and art can get kinda corny but the plot itself is good. Its CG art. I didnt know that because it was shrinkwrapped. I dont care for CGI as much as hand drawn.

V is an early work and Alan Moore admits it was a relatively young and unsophisticated piece.
However you can already see evidence of his pattern of thinking -- the references to various types of symbology, literary allusions and so on.
Interestingly, while Moore said the background of V (Britain under fascist dictatorship) seemed fairly unlikely, it may be less unlikely now, seeing the increase in surveillance, anti-terror laws and the rise of the BNP.

If you prefer more "real" characters, I may suggest checking out "Vagabond" by Takehiko Inoue (manga section of your local comic-book shop). It's a fictionalized account of the life of the fabled sword master Miyamoto Musashi.
Great story, lots of character development and phenomenal art to boot. The main downside is that a) it's still on-going and there're LOTS of volumes still, b) since its an import it's pricey. If you can snag a read through some volumes, however, I highly recommend.
