I was zooming around the quick-voter today and I had a couple of thoughts.

The gallery is being used for two distinctly different purposes. First, it's used as a repository for people to store any images that they might want to put into a post or article. Second, it's used as a showcase.

For a showcase, voting makes a lot of sense. For a repository, not so much. Nothing breaks the voting mood like getting a few random shots of unfinished bitz that are clearly out of someone's tutorial, but that are presented without context or meaning.

Would be be possible to have a check-box to indicate which use a given picture is intended for? Then limit voting to just those intended to be showcase pictures.

The voting system already does this but there are about 2000 images with no votes. As soon as an image gets a low combined coolness/paintjob score, it is counted as very WIP or unrelated, and gets taken out of normal voting rotation. It will still get shown but only once in a few thousand times. Images with no votes cant be assigned these sorts of settings as nothing is known about them until they get their first vote. The work involved in doing things this way is much easier than flagging every image with an intention as about 40% of gallery images are imported automatically from forum attachments. I agree it is still an issue though and am still thinking of ways to tweak it away.

I will crack the showcase / image hosting / WIP settings at some point though.

Hmm, I didn't know. I'll have to start voting on the WIP stuff.

How about removing Coolness from the equation as a tweak? Because there actually is a lot of cool unpainted WIP.

What about taking away the direct image import and merely making it a link to the gallery upload page. It would certainly school newbies and fix lazy Dakkites. Then maybe the selection 'check-box' already mentioned on the upload/process screens as WIP or Showcase may work? If they forget or don't care, the redundant low vote plan should fix the rest I'd think.

Just some thoughts.
