Wash the paint off fairly regularly, especially when using metallics.
As for making a point on the brush, there is not better substance for this than your own saliva (which is quite sticky and will hold the point as it dries).
Oh and always put the plastic sleeve back on (taking care not disrupt the point).

Simply put go and get yourself a small jar of Masters Brush Cleaner and Preserver...
It works great for both of your needs, it's cheap, and can be found in pretty much any arts or crafts store.
Hope this helps....

I second the Masters Brush Cleaner, I use it regularly and it keeps my brushes looking like new.

Always with the saliva It really creeps out my girlfriend when I paint and every few mins I'm licking a brush. But really a quick twist on your tongue makes a great point.

I agree, while painting wash your brush in clean water regularly, and yes, use saliva too. After each painting session (at the end of the evening or whatever) spend 5 minutes cleaning them properly with Masters.
Over the course of a painting session, capillary action will draw a small amount of paint up towards the metal finial. This is bad as it accumulates there and as it dries will force the bristles apart destroying the tip and your brush.
Also, never dip your bristles into the paint more than 1/2 way, and don't let the paint dry on the bristles.
Doing all these things will keep a brush good for months or years.

Never ever leave your brushes to soak in the water like some of the fools do around here, brushes should be stored bristles up.

Keeping the paint away from the metal bit usually stops the paint brush from braking apart, clean regularly and i find twisting the brush down the fold in a closed palm usually keeps the brush nice and pointy

Make sure the paint never come close to the metal part on the brush. If paint gets into that part it will dry and send the bristles in all different directions. Hope this helps

Buy 10 cent brushes from the bargain bin at your local craft store when your bristle break apart...hahaha...really, clean your brushes regularly and everything everyone else has said. Do that and your bargain brush will last you longer...my bargain brushes have lasted 6 months...

Also something no one has mentioned yet. Make sure you have a DESIGNATED brush for dry brushing type painting. Dry brushing is very damaging to a paint brush with a tip on it. So make sure you dont use a different brush everytime for it.

Another budget tip: Use your old budget brushes for the dry brushing. If you have brushes of different sizes which I do, you will end up with different sized dry brushes for pin point accuracy. Like dry brushing just the rivets or tiny corners on the Dreadnaught. The different sizes give you more control on where you want the effect to end up. I say this because I see people drybrush with the large brush then later go back to the same area to clean up the details.

I do not recommend this while the brush is still wet. It can cause the bristles to mildew and mold and ruin the brush. This is especially true if you only paint once or twice a week.
Second/third/what ever on the Masters brush cleaner...it cleans of course, but you can also shape the point while you have some clean soap on it and then let it dry. This can help you to retain a nice point over time. All you have to do is rinse it off when you are ready to use it.

Read the ingredients of your paints... Lot of these substances are quite toxic to living organisms... I would not advise you to lick your brush.
Plenty of appropriate products to clean with.
When you draw your brush tip through your paint (on a pallete) roll it slightly, which will reform the tip on a round brush... Don't reform the tip on a flat brush =)
